Quick thoughts on every second round series:
Lightning-Panthers (TBL wins 4-0): Overjoyed/thrilled/ecstatic/manic with excitement at how well this team is playing right now-all without Brayden Point. The stars are shining in Kuch, Hedman, and Stammer. Clutch contributions from Cernak, Colton, Perry, Paul, even Maroon. And Vasi...wow. In his last 5 games (since Game 7 of the 1st round): 181 out of 185 shots stopped, a .978 SV%, and a 0.80 GAA. Just unbelievable. Got to be ready for the winner of CAR/NYR though, whichever team advances is going to be a heck of a tough out either way.
Avalanche-Blues (COL leads 3-1): First off: I've disliked Kadri for a long time. But regardless of what you think about the Binnington play (which in my mind was a hockey play-nothing dirty about it at all), the threats and attacks he'd had to endure this week are nothing short of DISGUSTING. The lowlifes who've directed/forwarded this stuff to him are absolutely atrocious scumbags who will rot in hell, as they should. I've rarely been more happy for a player not on the Lightning than I was for Kadri when he got that hat trick. Must've been awesome for him. Hope he's able to thrive despite all this filth.
Now, onto the actual series-losing Binnington has cost the Blues a chance, IMO. Seravalli accurately used the phrase "Deer in the headlights" talking about Husso-he just hasn't looked comfortable. Also, the Avs are up 3-1 in this series without a single goal from MacKinnon and Makar, and a single empty-netter from Rantanen. Depth finally going the Avs way.
Flames-Oilers (EDM leads 3-1): What's happened to Calgary? Tkachuk and Gaudreau have vanished since Game 1, Vezina finalist Markstrom is playing like last year's version of himself, the D is in shambles, and even when breaks go their way (see: Rasmus Andersson scoring a goal from 160 feet away) they can't take advantage. On the other side, McDavid and Draisaitl-heck, even Kane and RNH-are absolutely shredding up the score sheet, Mike Smith has rediscovered the fountain of youth, D-men like Keith and Ceci are somehow playing quite well, and amazingly, they're one game away from the 3rd round. Flames are in a world of trouble.
Rangers-Hurricanes (Tied 2-2): The most evenly matched series so far. The difference in the Canes between being at home and on the road is glaring. They can't just bank on winning in Raleigh every time. They've haven't been bad, but Aho/Svechnikov/Teravainen have been pretty quiet so far, while Shesterkin has been a brick wall this series (5 goals allowed in 4 games). Meanwhile, Rangers keep getting contributions from different players-Vatrano, Copp, Zibanejad, Kreider, Fox, Panarin, etc. Canes will need to step up the offense if they want to advance. (Also, I'd put Andersen back in net if he's ready to come back. Raanta's been terrific, but Andersen had his best year in ages and should've been a Vezina finalist.)
