One of the best GM's in the league hits a home run here. Ristolainen is one of the best defensemen of this generation and to lock him up at this price is larceny.

I assume everyone who said "yes" to this being a good deal, hates the flyers and love that they are now saddled with this contract. That makes more sense to me than there being 8 people who pay enough attention to the NHL to come to cap friendly, log in, and vote on a poll but not enough attention to realize this is a horrible deal.

I wish you folks would explain these stats when you quote them. Not all of us are advanced analytics geeks. I assume the 1% means that 99% of the defensemen in the league are better than him, but in what respect? I don’t know what WAR means. Is it what they’re paying him to do?

Different players have different roles. I haven’t seen him play much but at first glance he looks like an offensive defenseman who’s no longer putting up offensive numbers. However, I don’t think that’s what the Flyers wanted him for. When he was putting up big numbers in Buffalo, he was getting more than half of his points on the power play. He’s been getting very little power play time with Philadelphia. Instead, Fletcher and Yeo talk about his physical play, and he’s been putting up decent numbers of hits and blocks, so it looks like they’re getting exactly what they wanted out of him. That being said, physicality, hits and blocks alone don’t normally get you $5.1M AAV. He’s taken a bit of a pay cut since his last contract, but they’re paying him like he’s still putting up 40-point seasons despite apparently having no intention of using him in that role. That doesn’t make sense.

In summary, I wish I knew what a 1% WAR means, but even without that I can see that this is an overpay.

Doing literally nothing (like Hextall was accused of) is better than doing stuff like this.
