Description
Its my firm belief that Dubas will make room for hyman, even if its a high cap hit. I believe he will get around 5-6mill x4-6 years. So, I will base his contract on the high end.

If the Leafs wait to re-sign Hyman for expansion draft reasons, there's legitimate reason to think he will leave. Money is one of the biggest motivators out there and Hyman can get more of it somewhere else.

Can we see year 2 of this plan? Not much cap and have to sign an entire bottom 6, Rielly, Sandin, Liljegren and a goalie.

It sure as hell helps. Guarantee they take him and it gives Toronto comfort of mind that they'll have an additional $3.5M in cap space. It's not a bad idea at all.

He'll be protected. Seattle won't have a shot to take him. Choose between Kerfoot and Dermott but Holl stays.

It's a completely different situation with Hyman. It's one where the player loves the situation he's in, the coaching staff loves him, management loves him, and Hyman grew up a huge Leafs fan. If it wasn't for the expansion draft m, he'd have an extension already. I'd be shocked if they already don't have a handshake agreement in place but are waiting until the day after the expansion draft to announce it for obvious reasons.

If you think money is the issue then you've got this all wrong. Toronto actually has the advantage when it comes to cash. Most teams are struggling right now in terms of real money where Toronto isn't and never will. They can offer Hyman more than anyone can in signing bonuses which puts more money in Hyman's pocket in a tough financial time. That would help bring the cap AAV lower to something where it fits in Toronto's number. I personally don't think he touches any number with a 6 starting off his salary and would be shocked if it's over $5.5M. I can't see him getting more than a $5M cap hit with the majority of it in signing bonuses (something very few teams in the league can do) and a full NMC. It would be more term to help lower the AAV too.

Wouldn't be shocked to see him sign at 6 years x $4.75M with his base salary being $750K each season and a $4M signing bonus each season. ... that would be to stay in Toronto.

I'm sure almost all UFAs...who want to stay with their current teams, will sign post expansion draft. It will allow their home team in effect to keep one more player.
Hyman is kinda in a unique situation....he's from a wealthy family and he personally has Toronto based businesses. Money probably isn't his top motivation, I'm sure team and location is.

I don't understand the need of getting rid of 3.5m Kerfoot with a sweetener just to sign 2.5m Nash.

Dubas will not be including Hallander or any other prospects to Seattle. One of Kerfoot or Dermott will be claimed. That’s just the way she goes.

The point is that the OP is telling people to stop making AGMs where other teams sign Hyman like its not an option. Hyman returning to the Leafs is far from a guarantee and money would be the top reason for it. You say money is an advantage for Toronto but lets face it, almost half the teams in the league were over the cap using LTIR relief this season. Its clearly not an issue for most. The issue Toronto has is cap space and just in general bad economics for big salaried players in Canada.

Again, advantage: Toronto. They can offer bigger signing bonuses. Not many teams can do that. Money won't be an issue.

For the added benefit of cap relief to be able to sign guys like Hyman, it might cost a decent prospect. Picks might not be what Seattle wants. & if it comes down to a prospect or be forced to keep Kerfoot and lose guys like Hyman, Dubas wouldn't hesitate for a second to move that prospect.

Hes not going to move a good prospect for another 1.5 millnin cap space, there are a dozen ways he can get that significantly cheaper. Hyman and seattle have zero impact on each other

If you read the description, it's what I think the high end of his contract would be. I honestly this it will end up being 4.5-5x5

He is their top line lw option. Whatch the lines in the playoffs. He has been playing up and down the lineup all year because he was needed in different areas. Also, see description as to why I showed that contract

But in reality he is a 3rd liner no matter where they play him...maybe a fringe 2nd liner. For an extra few K you could probably sign Taylor Hall who is an actual top line player.

Moving Kerfoot is $3.5M in cap space for 2 seasons. But nice math there bud.

Contract breakdown offer from Toronto that would be likely similar:

6 years x $4.75M cap hit, full NMC for first 4 seasons of the deal, 5th season is a limited NTC of 10 teams Hyman would accept a trade to, 6th season is a limited no trade clause of 20 teams Hyman would accept a trade to.

Year 1 - $6.5M signing bonus + $750K base salary = $7.25M total
Year 2 - $5M signing bonus + $750K base salary = $5.75M total
Year 3 - $5M signing bonus + $750K base salary = $5.75M total
Year 4 - $3.5M signing bonus + $750K base salary = $4.25M total
Year 5 - $2M signing bonus + $750K base salary = $2.75M total
Year 6 - $2M signing bonus + $750K base salary = $2.75M total

In the first 3 seasons Hyman receives 65.7% (that's 2/3) of the total money from the entire contract. With the style of play that Hyman plays, his play and production are likely to deteriorate over time so Hyman gets the insurance of a front loaded, bonus heavy contract in his pocket now with term, while the Leafs bring down the cap hit to help fit him in the overall cap. Hyman gets paid the most during his most productive years, then as he likely tails off makes him an easy buyout candidate, or at very least a very moveable contract to a team with less real money and in need of the cap hit to hit the floor. There might be 5 teams in the league that can offer Hyman a deal like this, and because of the pandemic that list may be even smaller. So he's staying in Toronto and Toronto has the advantage of money on their side.

3.5 to 4.
He's gonna be 29, his next contract is already on the down side, he's been a 20 goal, 40 point guy.
That's what those guys get. Any team paying a guy who is gonna be 29 on a 1 year high is just making a dumb decision.
Especially when it's 2 years now that he hasn't been able to stay healthy.
I like the player, but that's what he's worth. Anything more than that is a bad deal for a team. As he's got a lot of help and isn't the difference maker on where he is. He's a piece. A good piece but just a piece.

JVR and Hayes are both 3rd line players. Screw the positional argument. It's still $7M for a third line player.
