Description

Swayman went through arbitration last summer…and team and player were quite far apart. Swayman was asking for $4.8 million while Boston was offering $2.0 million (arbitrator awarded $3.475 million). After it was announced Swayman said, “I definitely don't wish it upon any of my friends or teammates moving forward, and I don't want to do it ever again, as well.”

Historically, 80% of players who endure that process find themselves on new teams in next two years.

And while many expect him to sign, they also expected him to sign extension when his window opened in January. Elliotte Friedman said in late December, “On the 1st, there are some free agents who can sign. Players who sign one-year deals can sign, and I think there’s going to be some interesting ones coming out of this. I’m really curious to see. …like Jeremy Swayman is one. That’s one that I’ve kind of wondered about.”

Emily Kaplan reported in early January, “Swayman was eligible for an extension on Jan. 1, and a few people have told me to expect that to get done soon." His agent, Lewis Gross, went to Boston the first week of January to hammer out an extension with Bruins front office. But they were unsuccessful.

Swayman’s next public public comments after the renegotiation started were rather negative. After being asked about getting named to All-Star Game, he said, “After dealing with what I did this summer with arbitration, hearing things that a player should never hear, it feels pretty special to be in this situation. So, I’m extremely honored and I’m really excited to join Pasta and Monty. I think it was a great learning experience. I’m not gonna lean on it. It’s already happened — what’s happened has happened.”

In March, Friedman wrote, The reason you’re hearing Linus Ullmark’s name is the calendar will force Boston to make a decision. They’ve begun discussing an extension with Jeremy Swayman and Brandon Bussi soon requires waivers. Something’s going to have to give.“

Chances are the B’s extend Swayman, but until he puts pen to paper, he should be the guy Devils ask about.

The comp would be the 2013 trade for Cory Schneider. Lou Lamoriello, Devils GM, gave up the 9th overall pick to Vancouver at the draft (it was announced when NJD puck came up at draft, which was being held in New Jersey, although the two sides had agreed to swap the night before).

While many expected Vancouver to break up the Luongo/Schneider tandem, few expected it to be Schneider. Most thought it would be Luongo, who Vancouver had been trying to trade since the previous deadline, but were unsuccessful.

Over the three previous seasons, Schneider had led the NHL in save percentage and goals-against-average. By 2012-13, he had firmly established himself as Vancouver’s starter. And like Swayman and Ullmark, the Canucks duo were former Jennings trophy recipients. Schneider had two years on his deal. Swayman is RFA.

If Boston moves sway and most people don't think so I don't see it for futures even that one that is going to be a pretty good pick most likely. Id think mercer is probably a big part of that deal.

Boston had no cap space for this season because of the performance bonus overages. They have like 20M this summer, I don't think they are at all worried

It’s a top-ten pick for a goalie…already an outlier. Adding Merced would be overkill.

I know I am a broken record because I've said this on a few Sway->NJD threads before, but core players don't get traded unless:
* The team holding the core player is selling off assets preparing for a rebuild or because of cap issues
* The team holding the core player receives an absolute godfather offer to compensate for the risk that they take on by trading the player away
* There is a hockey trade that addresses an area of weakness

The Bruins are in a re-tool, but I don't think they are bound for a rebuild. And they don't have cap issues this coming offseason. So cross off point 1.

You are arguing fair value for a trade. You might be right. But there is no need for the Bruins to take on risk for a fair value trade, so there is no incentive. Cross off point 2.

This goes back to the discussion about Mercer. I still think that *some* package built around him is your best bet. You could couple that with futures, to make a hybrid offer between points 1 and 2. I don't know what the Bruins would accept. I've been on record as saying I would at least consider offers for Swayman and keep Ullmark. I think many other Bruins fans disagree. I'm honestly not sure what would be an acceptable trade. But I'd start with something to address Boston's center talent ceiling issue as the centerpiece.

My underlying rationalization: GMs are not interested in getting fired, and trading away core players is a massive risk, even when the reward is high. Don Sweeney is not in danger of losing his job if he keeps Swayman and the team underperforms, but he could be if he trades Swayman away and the team's performance drops significantly, and futures won't save him from criticism if they aren't ready for a few years.

The primary differences

1. That draft was better

2. Vancouver was massively cap constrained with a second goalie whose salary would have a 9 year, $8.6m using todays cap figures.

If Boston were cap constrained, this is maybe a discussion but it isn’t.

Even if it was, they likely trade him out of the conference. Its maybe Ullmark, but I believe there is a strong possibility that they keep both

no thanks. We all know its Markstrom, He will be cheap cuz he literally wanted to be in Jersey. But get ready for RUSH THE CUP in 2 years. and watch Holtz get 30 goals cuz our GM is a clown and coach cant develop player. Just like Luke, dude is a pigeon out there in his own zone they better work on defence all offseason with him cuz oh boy its gonna get ugly again cuz teams have tape and will attack our weakness like Luke on D. Dont believe this year everyone knew the devils are soft and they got exposed 90% of the time cuz our system is TRASH and doesnt work cuz we can counter the counter

Boston would likely agree (if they agree) with the premise that certain guys are available (ie, if Eiserman or Lindstrom or whomever are available at #10).

2. That off-season (and following one) all NHL teams had compliance but-outs due to the lowering of the cap from the new CBA (was a lockout at beginning of 2012-13 season). Luongo’s AAV was a concern in that tighter cap period, but there were also teams that thought he could be bought out, placing him on the market for free. No one expected Vancouver to trade Schneider.

3. If they keep Swayman, Ullmark then they likely lose Bussi for nothing as he would have to pass through waivers next year (unless they trade him).

Tin foil hat on, I think they're waiting to sign Swayman until after they deal Ullmark. More cap space = more leverage.

But yeah, as others have said, he's not available and if he was it would probably be centered around Mercer. I've heard this draft is pretty weak outside of the top 3-5.

2. Bussi can be kept easily on a 23 man roster even if they keep Ullmark. That isn’t a massive consideration here.

3. I do find it interesting that you brought up two players not likely to be available at 10 when you talk about the strength of this draft.

4. My bet is both sides wanted to see how Swayman did in the playoffs before giving him the contract they are about to. If game 1 is any indication, this won’t be an issue

Either way, if they trade Swayman … I doubt it is to an East team.

1. Luongo had publicly requested a trade. My point is that most people expected him to be the one dealt. Schneider was viewed by many as the long-term answer in net for Canucks.

2. Keep him on 23-man roster, but only 60 minutes to play each night. Few teams keep three goalies on roster with plans to keep all of them.

3. Hard to predict, but I I give draft goes something like below…with names in D & E as possible for 10th overall.

No idea.

He wants size and grit, but is I guess upset that we acquired a top young power forward in Meier, and have seen him consistently get upset at targets like Colton, Trenin, Duhaime, etc.
He doesn't want us to "rush the cup" but is I guess somehow upset that we didn't go all in with Hamilton and Hughes hurt?

The only thing he seems to want is #HITZ from our defense.

Based on what? He's got exactly ZERO games in the NHL under his belt. He was ok but not great in Providence this year (DiPietro had better numbers for Providence). What team is going to put a claim in on an unproven goalie knowing they have to keep him on the NHL roster all season?
