They will need to retain on either Savard or Armia at the TDL

Keep Guentzel and Trade Necas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ht42</b></div><div>Montreal will likely gonna make the Offer Sheet threat during the trade negociations if Carolina aren't able to grow down their trading price.
They did something like that to convince Allen to open his NMC for NJ, with sending him on waivers or buyout his contract this summer.</div></div>
MTL aren’t desperate for Necas, our picks are more important because they could end up very low. Kent Hughes said not this offseason but the next one will be a very important/active one. A lot of 2025 picks, a lot of contracts expiring (Dvorak, Armia, Evans, Savard, Kovacevic). I think he will make a trade this offseason but I don’t think it’s gonna be for a young top 6 forward (Zegras, Necas, etc.).

Holtz to Habs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dgibb10</b></div><div>I like what he brings in terms of Physicality but in my view at least, you can't hide a dman. Montreal has tried to hide Xhekaj (he plays the easiest competition in the league), and it just makes the life of the other dman absolute hell.
If he was a forward that I could hide for 9 minutes a game and simply give more ice time to my top guys that would be okay. But a dman, especially one who can't stay out of the box and can't provide on either special teams unit is a problem.</div></div>
I don’t disagree with you here

Necas is a perfect target for MTL
The problem is MTL wouldn’t want to part ways with what CAR would want …

Holtz to Habs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dgibb10</b></div><div>Imo Xhekaj just sucks.
He has to be incredibly sheltered (Currently putting WAY too much strain on Guhle and Matheson). He consistently puts his team on the PK. He isn't good 5v5, and provides 0 value on special teams.
I don't know how you can play him and Hutson together, especially while hutson is developing.
He has ranked at/near the bottom of the league in quality of competition (this is forcing Guhle and Matheson to be at/near the top of the league).
He can't kill penalties, forcing Matheson to kill a ton of penalties, and he SUCKS at killing penalties.
MTL PK sucks and Xhekaj can't stay out of the box.
I don't think you can put Hutson into the role Matheson or Guhle currently plays where 40% of their minutes are against elite comp so Xhekaj can continue to play 17% of his minutes against elite comp.
And I don't know how you run a competent penalty kill with Hutson and Xhekaj on the left side. Who kills the penalties that Xhekaj constantly takes? Hutson???</div></div>
I personally don’t like Xhekaj on ice play. Struble & Harris are better and both can play PK. But what Xhekaj brings (hard hits, intimidating the other teams, our players playing better because they feels safer with Xhekaj in the line up, etc.) is something positive despite all the negative aspects he brings. He is still young and hopefully he will take less penalties going forward. For Hutson, it remains to be seen if he will play PK. He has a high IQ and active stick.

Holtz to Habs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dgibb10</b></div><div>I wouldn't do it if I were MTL, but Montreal and their fans are much higher on Xhekaj's potential than I am (who I believe is an AHL caliber player).
If MTL believes they can build a quality left side using Hutson, Matheson, Xhekaj, Harris, Struble, etc, it may make sense for them. If not, they should 100% keep Guhle</div></div>
Xhekaj is a bottom pairing dman, but he brings something unique. This is why MTL fans wouldn’t trade him. But Harris & Struble are projected career bottom pairing dman as well. Matheson is gone in two years, so right now the future left side looks like Guhle/Hutson/Xhekaj. If management thinks Dickinson is projected to be better than Guhle, now the trade looks interesting

Matheson is kinda annoying blocking our left side and management really likes him. If management are really high on Sam Dickinson for exemple and they know they could land a forward they really like at 10th (Eiserman/Helenius for exemple), it could be a scenario that make sense IMO. But they really like Kaiden Guhle, he is the only dman who proved he will be a stud (maybe not a true #1 dman but a really good one). Though call

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>Buium is probably a bit too similar to Luke. He is best with puck on his stick. Probably not same level of open ice skating and younger Hughes, but is great in tight spaces with puck. And likely becomes a d-zone exit magician, which is something NJD could use. At World Juniors, Casey paired with Buium. They were deployed more as defensive unit (did lent stop Buium from going forward). Would be fun as third pair.
But it’s all likely moot as I doubt Buium makes it to #10.</div></div>
I think Buium is the best defenseman but because of other dmans stature, I think he will fell out of the top 10 (unless Seattle or NJ select him)

Buium is one of the best dman in this draft
Having a future left side with Luke Hughes & Zeev Buium and a right side of Hamilton & Nemec is really good. When Hamilton plays decline, you have Casey Seamus to replace Dougie. Sieg won’t be there forever or could be traded when Buium is NHL ready

MTL 2024 1st round pick could be : Cayden Lindstrom / Cole Eiserman / Berkly Catton / Tij Iginla
Jordan Harris probably traded before that offseason
Raphael Harvey-Pinard (moved on if he has another 'bad' season)
Heineman/Farrell/Struble won't be waivers exempt then (this is why they are with the big club)

Realistic Offseason - For real this time
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ste_Catherine_Street</b></div><div>Why wouldn't they have Mailloux and Hutson? Last year they had Harris and Xhekaj...
Mailloux is the most NHL ready when compared to Hutson '24 and Harris '23, Xhekaj '23.
As for Barron, it doesn't matter what his value is now. Habs need to move on. Someone will get him for cheap, unfourtunately</div></div>
Last season 2022-2023, MTL didn't have a lot of defenseman under contract. Matheson, Savard, Edmundson, Wideman were the locks. We had Guhle, Harris, Xhekaj fighting for a roster spot. We even claimed Kovacevic before the season start via waivers.
For next year, Logan Mailloux looked good in his ONE NHL game, doesn't mean he is NHL ready. Even if he was, Justin Barron IS NHL ready and cannot be sent back in Laval. He was the better defenseman in Laval between him, Mailloux and Reinbacher. So why should Mailloux play over him in the NHL ? Hutson is more NHL ready than Mailloux/Barron/Reinbacher but could use some time in the AHL, it wouldn't hurt. Jordan Harris is currently an NHLer and young defenseman. Is he a part of the plan long terms ? Probably not, but you can't throw all of your future defenseman at once in the NHL when there's already good young defenseman in the line up. Take another year of development for Mailloux, Reinbacher, even Hutson if necessary. Savard & Kovacevic contract expires after 2024-2025, there will be room then

Matheson Guhle Xhekaj Harris Struble (waivers exempt) Hutson (waivers exempt) / Savard Kovacevic Barron Mailloux (waivers exempt) Reinbacher (waivers exempt). So if you send every dman waivers exempt in Laval, that leaves MTL with 7 defenseman
