If it's in the 2025 offseason and we're only retaining that much for a year, that Laine trade might be fine. Would really depend on how much (or if) he bounces back next season.

Hoglander has figured it out and has been good alongside Petey and Lindholm. There's no chance they're trading him now especially for that

laugh That offer for Jake Guentzel is nowhere near what Kyle Dubas is seeking for him, Axel Sandin Pellikka is a blue chip prospect and our future Erik Karlsson he's pretty much untouchable for an aging winger. besides Detroit won't be able to afford Guentzel without moving out more expensive players like Copp and perhaps Holl and that's just not happening. Perhaps with $2,000,000 retained Detroit might be interested in bringing homeboy Bryan Rust home.

      This sucks for Detroit.
      A) Guentzel doesn't even get Pellikka himself, let alone a hefty add
      B) If Holl could fetch anything, Detroit would just do that trade themselves

I honestly don't understand this Pens team. They are a top 10 team in nearly every metric 5v5. But that PP is just soooo bad.

Maybe. But adding high picks on top of that retention is absurd just to get Detroit's, like, eighth best prospect who plays a that is more than well occupied in Columbus for the forseeable future (both handedness and style, being a small, puck-moving RHD). Also, Columbus won't even own that 2025 second, since it's conditional and they're certainly not sending Philly the 2024 one instead.

Where is the value for Ottawa outside of that 2nd round pick?

It's also very unlikely ASP is a Pens player by then, considering Detroit probably doesn't move him for Geuntzel this year. On the surface level, I don't hate the idea of the trade; Jiricek - ASP - Severson is a fine right side, but that's contingent on moving Peeke, Boqvist, scratching Gudbranson, etc, and ASP would be redundant with Mateychuk and Werenski in all likelihood.

Too many moving parts to say definitively yes or no. Picks I assume are adjust to taste.

It's simple first they have had some injuries and losing a player like Guentzel really hurts. Second they are top heavy with aging players, The players producing regularly are all over 30 and they also making the most money. With about $53M dedicated 9 players. With less money to spend on their bottom 6 they aren't getting enough production from them. Look at Detroit the reason they are still in the hunt for a playoff spot is all 4 lines are producing. They currently have 10 forwards with at least 10g and 20p and an 11th who is one goal away from that.

I get that but the top is pulling their weight enough to be a top 10 team. The PP is their biggest problem and that's where the top heavy teams should be fine. But, it's the opposite. It's very perplexing.
