This deal really makes me wish there was a neutral or okay option. I think this deal is very much that. This is similar to Dylan Larkin's first contract, Buchnevich's second contract, or Huberdeau's first. They all were more established as first liners and port scorers, though Tippet seems to have better goal scoring. I think this will be a good deal if he is a legit first liner, a fine/solid/okay deal if he is a second liner, and a poor deal if he's a third liner.

This for one season of first line production seems like too much

But I mean, this is kind of where the market lies at this stage of the league

That's the going rate for 2nd line side of middle 6 salary as early as next season, this is going to be a steal of a contract.

Great contract

Dubas would have given Tippett $15M for 4 years

Seems weird to make this comment based on how bad your new gm is 😂

Terry (25) 176 points in 274 games. 7 x 7M$
Hagel (25) 132 points in 211 games. 8 x 6.5M$
Tippett (25) 119 points in 248 games. 8 x 6.2M$

Makes sense.

Best part of this deal is that Tippett only has a Modified No-Trade Clause for the 4 middle years of this 8-year contract. Flexibility for the Flyers has substantial value. Tippett could have got more money in negotiating those M—NTCs.

TBF, both have to be pretty good at their jobs to be doing it for 5+ years and 10+ years respectively

Difference is though, Tippett's the best forward on his team... Hagel isn't close (Terry's comp doesn't make too much sense) and is also able to play and thrive under torts

Fantastic signing for Philly. This is going to be a steal considering they've locked a young, pretty good top-6 winger up for basically the entirety of his prime at under 6.5 mil. W.

This seems fair, depending on how much Tippett improves from here, this could age really well. Tippetts played like a Top 6 player, with a little more consistency he could be a real good top6er. Definitely adds a needed element to the Flyers with his size and speed.

Then you sign new guys to 1 year deals and trade them at the TD. Keep recycling until you don't have too. Instead KD signs overpaid depth players to multi-year deals and it achieves nothing.

No. You sign the right players and let the riffraff go. The best players for the Hawks this season, besides Bedard, have been Foligno, Dickinson and Mrazek and you build the right culture by keeping those guys. If you have to overpay them a bit to keep them on a bad team, so be it, but it's a smart thing to do. It helps the organization going the right way. E.g. Tyler Johnson/Nikita Zaitsev won't get it done, but the right players will like the guys I mentioned.

Out of any forward that has played a minimum of 250 mins at 5v5 this year (about a minimum of 27 games), here is how Tippett ranks (out of 386 players):

G/60 -- 15th
P/60 -- 46th
Shots/60 -- 1st
ixGF/60 -- 10th
iSCF/60 -- 5th
Rush Attempts/60 -- 2nd

He has showed great offensive talent for the Flyers since last year and has improved into this year. With the expected cap rise, I think this deal is in the money for both sides.

He wasn't signing $4.5 for 8 years, maybe 2 as a bridge but then you run the risk of that $6.2 becoming $8 if he performs well. Solid contract, not without risks obviously, but should work for all parties.

I’d feel that way if he was older. He’s only 24, and wasn’t really playing regularly until last season. It looks more like a growth trajectory to me than something he may not be able to repeat. There’s always some risk, especially with an 8 year contract, but i think this has a better chance of turning out good for the team than bad, especially since they didn’t burden the contract with things like signing bonuses and no move clauses that would make it difficult to get rid of him if things do go wrong.

The deal has risk, but without that you weren't getting this level of upside.

Tippett is 24, so the 8 year term is a benefit in a rising cap environment, not a negative. At $6.2M you don't need Tippett to be a superstar for this deal to be solid, you just need him to be an adequate top 6 winger. Even if he only tops out at what he's shown this year, the deal likely ages well simply with a rising cap, and if he has the ability to take a step, there is a good chance for substantial surplus value.

In terms of team fit, Philly is in the phase where taking a few of these types of risks to lock in some certainty is a good strategy, so all around I like this deal for Philly. I mean there is risk, but that is how you get value, taking measured risks where the upside is just simply bigger than the downside. If you are good at evaluating those, you will gain more value than you lose by a significant margin, and this looks like a smart bet.

For Phillies sake I hope youre correct in your analysis (well articulated)
However Im of the opinion its a slight overpay for a 20goal scorer..I see him as a 3rd liner who can (on occasion) move up to replace (temp) top 6 fwd.
