I think straight up for a 3rd round pick would be fair right now. But I think they get at least a second at the TDL. I’d wait honestly. Several top contenders will pay. TB likes to pay up.

I have a feeling the way this trade works is that Klingberg is added rather than the Flames retaining on Zadorov. Flames will want to keep their retention slots for the bigger, more valuable assets and Klingberg is the cost of doing business to make the cap work if they aren't retaining.

Why not have Chiarot and Savard in your comps, or Ristolainen and Kulak?

Also small clarification on Petry: MTL didn't get Lindstrom + 4th when he asked for a trade, they got Matheson and a 4th for Petry and Poehling. The Lindstrom trade was more a GM doing a vet a solid by sending him to his ideal destination regardless of the return.

I think the Kulak-to-Edmonton deal that was made with Montreal is good precedent for Zadorov, trade request be damned.

Full retention for a second round pick and a live body. Everyone walks away with what they want.

I had it, but since he was RFA-to-be, younger, and had way less playing time/experience, it was hard comp to make.

(could be better fit for Kylington trade comp)

That's a deal I can live with. Just have to work out the cap issues.

So, in other words, why isn't Zadorov getting a 1st round pick plus?

-- Savard was a solid dman back then and was #3 in Columbus. He was also part of three-way trade and was double-retained...so a good part of his return was baked into the salary savings.

-- Chiarot was an odd trade as he was Montreal's #1 in 2022, but was an analytics mess...many teams were not bullish, but he was dealt between two clubs that were not data-driven teams. And generally seen as poor trade.

-- Risto trade is generally seen as one of the worst trades in recent times. But like Chiarot, he was #1 in ice time, was traded between two clubs that didn't manage with analytics. Also, Chuck Fletcher is terrible GM.

All of these were also outliers....

IF Zadorov gets Traded; I think you’re going to be very surprised what he returns 50-75% retained, especially given the interest he’s garnering and the fact he’s Faster, Bigger and Better than MTL’s Chiarot and CLB’s Savard

Edmundson = Injury Prone and therefore Unreliable
              Schenn/Bogosian = Old, Slow, Can’t Score
Lyubushkin = Smaller, Slow, Can’t Score
              Klingberg/Petry/Gustaffson = Not Comparables
              Braun/Hamonic/Hagg/J.Johnson/Benn = Not Good/Washed
              Megna/Bear/Nemeth/Hakanpaa/Gudbranson = Not Good

Most of your Comparables are simply warm bodies brought in for depth and injury insurance. Just because we play Big-Z on our 3rd Pairing a lot of the Time doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be a 2LD on most NHL Teams

Zadorov plays 3rd pair on team that ranks 27th in goals allowed

How do you get Z as 2LD on most teams? I would see him as 3LD on most teams....

Would be 2LD: ARI, CHI, DET, PHI, SJS
Would be 3LD: ANA, BOS, CBJ, COL, EDM, FLA, LAK, MIN, MTL NYI, PIT, STL, TOR, VAN, WSH
Would be 4LD: BUF, CAR, DAL, NJD, NYR, OTT, SEA, TBL, VGK, WPG

(a few of teams where he'd be 4LD play a LD on right side, like Buffalo, Dallas, Jersey, Vegas, Winnipeg)

Only found 5 teams where he may play 2LD (and couple of those may be debatable). None are buyers.

Yes, CGY’s struggling this year, but we’re talking about Zadorov, who’s not and not CGY’s Defence as a whole

You just listed 25/32 Teams you could see Zadorov filling a spot on and we know there’s already interest in him from TOR, NJD, BOS, VAN with more to come I would gather

I could easily see him at 2LD on TOR, LAK, FLA, NYI, VAN, STL, WSH contributing 0.30-0.50PPG too, so that’s 12/32.

Okay, you’re right, I’m off by 5 Teams, my bad

You do that, it’s your Fantasy Thread after all, but you’re undervaluing Zadorov and not taking in to consideration the demand for him and his unique attributes and I’m confident you’ll be surprised how far off you are on this one

Just like Diamonds & Gold are both desirable and valuable, so is Nikita Zadorov. He’s improved substantially from when we acquired him from CHI for a 3rd and the reason his Snake of an Agent put out that tweet is because they feel he deserves more ice time and a spot in the Top-4 and on the PP; it’s purely a negotiation tactic at this point and Conroy didn’t bite and has walked way from the table, so we’ll see how this plays out

Soucy’s injured now too btw and Ian Cole is a 3LD, so give me VAN too

IMO the reason these players were getting so much ice was the weakness of their teams' defense. None of the players I mentioned had an Andersson, Weegar or Hannifin ahead of them on the depth chart at the time they were traded.

Regardless of ice time (which is largely driven by teammate quality) I still maintain that all of Chiarot, Savard, Kulak, Ristolainen, Zadorov and even maybe Gavrikov (though his trade is more complicated because of Korpisalo being part of it) can be claimed to have more in common through their role as big and rugged number 4/5 defensive defensemen than Zadorov has with the likes of Benn, Folin, Josh Brown, Beaulieu, Coburn (in 2021), Del Zotto, Gilbert, Manning and Jack Johnson (most of whom were depth defensemen in their last or second-to-last year in the NHL) and therefore are fully worthy of inclusion in this list of comparables for Zadorov.

In what sense has Zadorov been a problem in the locker room!?

Because he stepped up and blasted some of the guys publicly for not putting fourth proper effort and playing like individuals and for themselves instead of a cohesive unit and team!? Because some guys aren’t sure whether they want to remain Calgary Flames and only care about their next upcoming contract and/or are butt hurt over how much Huberdough got paid!!!

Zadorov is the only guy to openly show any form of passion or interest to play for The City of Calgary and the Flames Organization. He’s said he’d love to be a Flame FOR LIFE (including the game after the Trade Request rumours came out) and Ownership/Management hasn’t properly rewarded him for that.

His Bonehead absolute Snake of an Agent thought it would be a good idea and help negotiations by suggesting he might be better served going elsewhere if he wasn’t going to be promoted when clearly Hanifin & Weegar have been struggling, as if he had any leverage. Conroy balked at that btw and Zadorov has been clear they’re discussing it if he’s not going to be offered a contract, properly valued and rewarded for his passion and play

That sounds like a Leader to me. I would strip Backlund of the C and slap it on Zadorov immediately if he were to Fire his Agent and sign long-term. I’d also strip the A’s off of a Lindholm, Huberdeau and Tanev and then Trade out Lindholm, Backlund, Hanifin & Tanev straight away.

The Flames need to rid themselves of any cry baby’s and whiny entitled losers in favour of guys who want to be and play there. Andersson keeps his A, but give the others to Coleman & Kadri and leave the other open for Weegar or Huberdeau to EARN
