I think it’s disrespectful for Hellebuyck
He is a way better goaltender than Bob IMO
I mean, peak Bob was worth two Vezina’s; but, the point isn’t whether Helleybuck is better than Bob *right now*, because he is, even if Bob had a nice run in the playoffs (there is a reason why “goalie” has become a verb). The point is whether Helleybuck is going to be worth the $8M-$9M someone is going to pay him until he’s in his late thirties.
Goalies in the NHL are the new RB’s in the NFL. There are going to be a few diamonds, sure, but you’re better off building around a 1a/1b on mid-level contracts than you are investing big money into one guy to carry your team for 65+ games.
Even then, goalies are voodoo.
Absolute nobodies show up and tear the league apart, then
turn to pumpkins. Proven stars go from savior to
buy-out speculation. Goalie just isn’t a position I’d want to invest high-end money into; I.e. the money Helleybuck is going to demand, and that someone is likely going to pay him.
