Love Backstrom (as a Caps fan), but his contract is pretty brutal. 5x9.2m signed 3 years ago (at 32 years old)

As a WPG JETS fan... I approve. Especially of PLD in LAK. HAHAHAHAHAHA

Thanks for taking that big arse lazy crybaby, overpaying him and giving us some very good people in return.

Rielly contract is actually very reasonable. PLD is only 25 years old. 8.5m x 8 is not a bad contract at all for what he brings.

I would actually add Erik Karlsson to this list. I can guarantee no team would take him for free at full cap hit and he just won the Norris. That proves his contract is way too steep. EK at 9.5 might get a team to take him for free though but I don't see anyone paying for ek at 9.5m. Once you start getting into the 7.5m range, that's where I see EK starting to have some good value.

Copp: average 3C with bad defensive metrics getting paid over 5.5M. Also only scored 9 goals this season

Rielly: defensive liability who regressed offensively and is signed for 7 more years at a big cap hit

I don't think Horvat is an 8.5M player but yeah it's not that bad. As for PLD, it's way to early to be saying that considering his age, might as well put Thomas on here as well. I would even say Huberdeau doesn't belong even though he's probably not going to be a 10.5M player by the end. Last year was an outlier probably and I expect him to play to his contract in year one.

His new contract was retro pay... for signing a 10 yr $67 million contract during his prime years, he was an underpaid star player.

MacKinnon's huge pay hike was also a retro pay contract, for his previously super low contract.

San Jose is way underrepresented here. Vlasic, Karlsson, Couture, Hertl. All terrible contracts. Karlsson just won the Norris and can't even be traded without major concessions as his contract is so bad.

He was injured, and had a bad regular season, but did you see his playoff performance? He's still a top offensive defense and that doesn't make his contract bad. He's 28 or 29, if he's good for another 5 years it doesn't matter if the last two are bad.

Karlsson is tough because yeah the contract isn’t great but he also won the Norris and had 100 points. I was debating whether or not to put him in and decided not to. Can totally get putting him in though

At 5v5 this playoffs, Rielly was arguably the most dangerous defensemen... Rielly has leadership/Heart/Grit and is physical along the boards

But what confuses me is that you say Rielly is a defensive liability and yet you don't have Tyler Myers here...

One playoff run doesn’t make your contract good. Do you think Bobrovsky’s contract is good?

I wouldn’t even call Rielly an top offensive dmen anymore. Among defenders with 200+ minutes at 5v5, he was 58th in P/60. Behind the likes of Gavin Bayreuther, Calvin de Haan, Luke Schenn, Jamie Oleksiak, Nick Perbix, and Dylan Demelo

Defensmen's end of peak is around 34/35, near when Rielly's contract ends

Rielly was tied for most even strength points by a defensemen these playoffs and is consistently around a ppg in the playoffs

Horvat’s is really bad. His play really fell off in NY, and really cashed in on a contract year spike season. Good for him, but Isles fans will agree it’s a bad contract

PLD I see the argument why it’s not, but I just don’t ever see him being worth that much (but I also am maybe taking the trade return into account also which also skewed my opinion a bit)

Miller: very reasonable contract for someone who’s 12th in the league in points over the last 4 years, especially compared to guys like Horvat/Dubois/Hertl

Garland: good 2nd liner making 2nd liner money. At most maybe 500k overpaid, but I’d say he’s worth his contract

Sergachev: could definitely be here. Didn’t really think about him tbh

Couturier: not sure if he’s gonna play again so didn’t include him

One bad year doesn't make your contract bad... He went goaless for a long stretch of the season and then suffered injuries. His playoff performance is indication that he hasn't fallen off.
