Interested to hear your thoughts. I think Wahlstrom is similar to Dach in a way. Big, mobile (more of a shooter and a passer), I think he could thrive under MSL, albeit a year older than Dach. Could be an ideal winger for Suzuki and Caufield. Aho is a stop gap for sure, Wilde has some potential and is a hometown kid, and an early second to boot. Maybe Kidney could come out but I think there's good value for both teams here.

No GM in their right mind is trading away a top 4 pick in this draft unless it's for McDavid.

Fair, but San Jose did just move the 11th overall pick as a rebuilding team at the draft for like...29th and a second. They're convinced they can still compete.

-I think Arizona would do this - basically the same cap hit, with Bailey being a somewhat useful player that actually gets paid a little less ($3.5M in real dollars vs. Little's $3.75M.)

-I don't know if either team jumps on this - I think if you take out the LHD (Habs fans love Wifi too much to be rational about his trade value) it gets closer to reality, but it's also assuming a big swoon from the Isles. If the season ended today, their 2nd rounder would be #48OA - they'd have to fall below Nashville, Colorado, Detroit, Buffalo, St. Louis, Ottawa, Philly, Florida, & Vancouver to get down to #39 OA (which would also mean that, if the lottery held, that Florida pick would probably be later than #10OA). It's close but I think it would need tweaking - that said, I wouldn't do it because...

-If San Jose won #2OA I can't see them trading it for #10 & #13. If you go by the GSVA draft pick value chart, in an average year #10 (6.0) and #13 (5.3) wouldn't get you enough value for #2 (12.3); when you're talking about a draft year where the 2nd through 5th ranked guys could very easily be #1OA in a year without Conor Bedard, I think there's going to be an even higher value on it. Even if you add on a couple B+ prospects and later picks, I think San Jose passes and picks Adam Fantilli (or whoever you think is #2 behind Bedard.)

Dach has the draft pedigree, is a year younger, has better stats when he was traded on a way worse team (chicago), and plays center. To me he's more valuable than Wahlstrom. Aho will probably be a 3rd pairing D man and you can get those anywhere. Wilde has shown nothing at the NHL level or the AHL level, so he's not valuable. The 2nd is ok but it's just a mid round second round pick. Then you want the habs 2021 2nd round pick that is pacing for 90 points in the QJMHL. On top of that you want a rookie Defensemen who in his first year has 13 points in 40 games. He has 3 less points in 5 more games than Wahlstrom and he is only a defensemen. This deal is massively tilted toward the Islanders and it's not even close

Wahlstrom doesnt remotely have the same trade value as Dach did a year ago the trade is terrible even for just the pick

The Sharks got the 27th, 34th, and 45th draft pick. So a late first, and early 2nd and a mid round 2nd. Plus last years draft is way weaker than this years draft. So picks are more valuable this year than last year

-Arizona is not in the business of taking on more money out of the goodness of their hearts
-Montreal is not trading a top-10 pick in a strong draft, plus Xhekaj (who they are very high on) and Kindey for Wahlstrom, a 2024 UFA Aho and a prospect who's in the ECHL.
-San Jose is not trading the 2nd overall pick in a strong draft for that return.

The value is awful for Montreal.

-Montreal is swapping out young, big, physical 22 year old D-man they like a lot in Xhekaj for an older, undersized, less productive D-man. Even if Aho may be an upgrade in the present (and I doubt actual front offices would think that way), he's UFA in 2023, well before Montreal would want to compete.
-Wilde hasn't even established himself in the ECHL yet.
-Wahlstrom is good (even if another right shot winger is the last thing Montreal needs), but Montreal's giving up a better pick and a much deeper draft.

Dach put up 19-40-59 in 159 GP prior to the trade; Wahlstrom is at 32-29-61 in 161 GP currently. So they basically score at the same per game rate, with Wahlstrom being a better pure goal scorer. But! Let's look at their TOI: Dach averaged 16:31 per night in Chicago, while Wahlstrom has averaged 12:04 during his time on the island. So one guy scored 0.37 PPG while getting top 6 minutes, and the other has averaged 0.38 while basically getting 4th line minutes. Dach's points/60 minutes on the Hawks were 1.5, 1.2, & 1.8; Wahlstom has been 2.3, 1.6, & 2.3. If Wahlstrom had been given the same amount of leash that Dach was given on some bad Chicago teams, his raw scoring numbers would be much higher.

Dach also was basically even in terms of possession in Chicago (50.3 CF) while Wahlstrom has driven play at a stronger level (53.1CF), and Wahlstrom has typically only received PP2 time while Dach averaged a shade under 2 minutes of PP time every night.

So sure I guess if you just look at the back of their hockey cards you could make the argument, but I don't think it really holds up when you compare a guy like Dach getting big minutes with guys like Patrick Kane and Alex Debrincat (his #1 & 2 most common 5v5 linemates) versus Wahlstrom playing on a contending team spending most of his ice time with JG Pageau and Zach Parise.

......wahlstrom is older AND the trade is later. The concept of trading for a 21 vs 23 year old on potential should be basic knowledge on these forums.

That's not at all why they did it. They did it because the past draft was a crapshoot, and we got Bystedt, Lund, and Havelid with picks in that one trade. Bystedt and Havelid each may have as high of, if not higher value than Geekie who was taken with that traded pick.

If they were trying to stay competitive, they would have traded it for a roster player

Dach was a 21 year old that was considered a borderline bust when Montreal gave up a 1st rounder straight up for him. Again, we're talking about a guy who put up bottom-6 numbers while skating with Patrick Kane & Alex Debrincat.

Wahlstrom at the deadline would be 18 months older than Dach was at the time of the trade and has produced at a 2nd-line rate while getting bottom-6 minutes and spending most of his 5v5 time with a 36/37 year old Zach Parise and a defense-first center in JG Pageau. Wahlstrom right now is a more established product than Dach was at the time of his trade, and certainly isn't a "depth forward". I can buy that 1st round picks are going to be weighed differently this year than they were last year, but acting like the Dach trade makes perfect sense while saying Wahlstrom wouldn't get nearly that return is just blatant Habs homerism.
