I am a huge fan of the kid (coming from a Leafs fan) and am curious about his actual value in Montreal's opinion. I could see something below being a base...

My reasoning for this is: if Toronto has a constant supply of young players that pan out, they will have multiple chances at the cup even if Matthews leaves (I also would love to see Slaf play with Tavares/Matthews). Montreal solidifies their top 6 (assuming Montreal signs Monahan) and have a pretty good supply of prospects coming up. This is just in good fun (first time posting lul) and wanted to make sure I am not homerizing my players! I am a huge fan of Slaf and can't wait to see his impact in the future (just sadly against my team)

I wasn't sure based on this being Slaf's first year and the way he sees the ice. I think of him being a big impact player come playoffs but thanks for feedback!

Problem is Marner's cap hit is far too high for trading for Marner to be a smart move for MTL to acquire him especially since it's going to require Slaf+ to acquire him.

From Toronto's side, Marner is a key player 5v5, PP, and PK and he fits better with the core and where the team is at so trading him doesn't make much sense. The Leafs will just have to draft/develop their own young players or offer sheet/trade Slafkovsky if they ever get the opportunity.

Understandable, I honestly want to see what Slaf's value was and didn't find anything. Figured I might as well see and tried not to be biased for the Leafs (I am a little weird in the sense that I am super high on Slaf and super low on Marner) but I 100% see what you mean by this

This is funny. There is not much in the way of youth. Tradingbpicks for the last several years will empty the cupboard.

20 games into their careers, 1st overall picks are unavailable under all circumstances. They should only be moved for players that you'd trade 1st overall picks for, and that's Matthews and Marner but Toronto can't take that risk nor should they trade either when they're competitive.

After living with a bunch of Sens fans while my team goes on to get beaten in the last game of the 1rst round 6 times straight/losing to a 42 year old Zamboni driver who works for them/ blowing the most leads out of all 32 teams/ not winning a cup since 1967 (just got reminded it wasn't 1969 today!), you start to develop these thoughts (I used examples from Tampa (Drouin trade example) when Yzerman and Colorado now [Duchene trade example])

I think Toronto has another 2 years of being a cup contender. After that, Matthews may walk and Tavares will have dropped off substantially. Nylander will probably walk too. The problem is much like the Wings had after 2010. Players age out, long term injuries cripple the cap, and the youth that arrives is simply not enough to keep contending. Finding second round steals can work out, but it sure is pretty tough to fill the top half of your roster with Kucherovs and Shea Webers. Tampa had two foundational players early 1st rounders and hit gold on the goalie. They then got super lucky on a few late round picks. That is a rarity.

I might actually agree with the Marner for Slafs trade. It gives Toronto deadline cap flexibility to make one or two last runs. If Slaf is a bust, so be it. If he pans out, he is a trade piece to start tbe rebuild in a couple years. Not sure how it works for Montreal though. Marner is the better player, but he doesn't line up with their timeline.

I understand your frustration with this post being unrealistic but you have to remember how your first Armchair Gm was and maybe cut me some slack. I was just trying to get the view of what Slaf costed and what Leaf fans were willing to pay. Personally, I am just not that high on Marner and I have the right to have that opinion

It might work if Montreal gets a 3rd team involved to get some assets of need for Marner. Would the Avs give up Newhook and Girard for Marner?

Just a note;

Former top 5 Drafted Overall picks generally will be untouchable until their elc is finished and the original team can decide whether it was a stud or dud (the Oilers with Pontypool) or too expensive to keep (Habs with K.K.) or when another team tries to steal him (Canes with Aho).

So doing a ACGM for Slav is too soon.

Unless there's an unhappy rift, like what may be going on in Seattle with Shane Wright.

Matthews is probably walking (he wants to be closer to home... this hurts me deeply as he is my favorite player of all-time) and Tavares is already on the decline but I do feel with not paying Matthews, they will be able to keep Nylander. I do think that if Montreal finds a way to keep Monahan, they would have a proven top 6 with a stream of young kids coming up (Beck as an example). This helps Montreal get closer to that contention spot especially as the cap dramatically increases over time. Based on his style of play and his size, I feel that Slaf has multiple ways of panning out and playing with Tavares could help his development. As for second round steals, I feel Minten, knies and niemela are examples of that and hope Murray and Sammy will become steals as this year goes on.

I don't think Sakic will like the idea of having 42 million dollars tied up in 4 players. However, I do see a team missing that big name superstar (to get bums in seats) with a good prospect pool going after Marner if he's ever available

The Red Wings thought they had later round steals in Jurco, Jarnkrok, Sproul, Marchenko, Jensen, Nyquist. Nyquist is the shining example of what you usually get when you know you have a steal. They can't all be Robinsons and Oetengers (Dallas). And the guts you mention most likely bust, or top out at Nyquist, which, sad to say, isn't enough to carry momentum.

There could be a broker team to retain a bit for a first. The Avs get better for the next few years with Marner. That strengthens the their window for 2-3 years.
