Tell me you are a biased fan without saying it, if he can play top 4 minutes on a blues team that won a cup.. why cant he play top 4 minutes on the oilers garbage defence. He 100% improves them, hes paid like a 3-4 defenceman and thats what hed be to them theres no retention here. Take your bias elsewhere, then come back without it.

Sujet: Transitioning from rebuilding to competing with caution

Most of this makes good sense, think the long and relatively tame comments are proof. Only thoughts are if you trade your first for laf you are losing 4 years of team control over a high prospect in a deep draft, and you can find around 200 defencemen better and cheaper than Ristolainen. Patience is definateky the way they need to keep building

Value wise im sure thatd be fine, but the retention is needless and unlikely. 3.5 is not alot for a top 4 defender, more likely oilers send back a yamamoto, puljujarvi, Ryan, Foegle in a deal for cap reasons.

Its low if anything for a top 6 center retained at the deadline based on all recent trade trends. A late first and a prospect that is b+ at best, a 3rd rounder that hasnt dominated at any level is hardly a high price.

Quick notes
- canucks/habs dont seem like logical partners here
- Avalanche trade seems fine
- habs to rangers are not giving up kidney and 1sts during a rebuild for players with less team control.
- way too much for dadanov 4th at best
- kings trade makes little sense, 5 mill is too much to take on for 3 years as the youth starts getting paid. Maysll just keep allen they have lots of picks already

Habs accept, Edmonton gets defensive depth and cap space next year. Habs get a good pick and can afford to take a chance on a 26 year old in their bottom six for under 3 mill.

Anderson probably has a higher trade value then boeser simply because vancouver cant stop ruining their own players values and making bad contract decisions. Anderson is viewed as an nhl unicorn thats scores, hits, and fights, an nhl gm wet dream.. whereas boeser is seen as a soft scorer with injury issues. These arent my evaluations and values, but this is what insiders and team medias write about each player. League reputations matter to gms and pro scouts which is why values often seem off to the public in trades

Hughes current trades target underperforming young nhlers, already drafted prospects, and picks. Based on what minute eating defenders go for on the trade market, Edmonton is probably including Puljujarvi or Yamamoto. From there it would be a first or prospect and probably not both. Jp/Ky + Xb/1st.. is he worth that.. no... does it matter to gms... also no.

Teams dont typically retain for more than 1 year. Its possible here as its only 2 seasons, but would limit the habs options during next seasons deadline if they are selling again. Its also not a very big contract for a top 4 defender so retention seems unlikely regardless. It would meet their current ask, whether high or not though.

Values aside, theres just no way two teams handcuff themselves for 5 years by using one of their retention slots. And as weve seen in the past theres a premium paid when these two teams trade so retention would be a non-option anyways. Again im not arguing values, just applying past league history to this scenario

Sujet: Bo Horvat

Horvat is not a fit in Jersey, unless you are ready to give up high assets and make in your 3rd line center. I really like the idea of a hughes, hiscier, horvat trio that would be hard for any team to beat in the playoffs and protects you from injury problems. Alas gms are rarely that bold and horvat likely says no if he has any protection(not sure).

Only observation is that protected 1st rounders that bump to the following years if top 10, almost always have to be unprotected for the next year.

JE is a great target for the avs looking to repeat with minute eating, low salary, and playoff style. Only makes sense if the Avs flip Girard (seperate trade) and theres no retention, its already a low salary and Habs could easily find a trade that doesnt retain for 2 years. Theres really no point in arguing values on here, but getting JE for 2 playoff runs probably cost more than a first too.

Breaking new.. its harder to score in the nhl as opposed to the chl. Virtually the same number of 100 point getters this season in the ohl too, so your knock on the Q is just dumb. That aside you tried to make your point by comparing mantha to kidney based on chl production as if it was a knock on value, again mantha being a good player kinda negated the point you tried to make.

I do not know the rule on this but this concept only works if you can add trade protection to an offer sheet. Otherwise the habs dont gain any advantage or leverage. Before people state PLD is a trash human for wanting out lets remember how toxic the jets locker room is reported to be by even jets writers, they seem to have a knack for driving talented players away.
