Description
Habs are eager to trade him, I think he would look great in the top 6. He is also good friends with huberdeau which would mean he resigns here in the summer for cheap

Don't see how Montreal could say no. Their next best offer may be picking him up on waivers.

The 4+ mil over the cap may be a problem.

I'm pretty sure the Habs would move him for future considerations right now to be honest. If he plays well, then maybe they can get a pick back, otherwise he's free. He's mentally checked out in MTL so getting anything for him is a bonus.

I'd maybe do Drouin (or Dadonov) if they came 50% retained + we received MTL's 2023 2nd Round Pick FOR Oliver Kylington + CGY's 2nd Round Pick

If he has good linemates, he can easily score 20-30 goals imo

Drouin is a headcase and has mixed up priorities.

This guy is gonna finish his career in Europe as of next year; A cautionary tale to all that skill is not a replacement for hard work. Drouin stopped working the moment he made the NHL. This guy could have been better than Johnny Gaudreau but instead he's been benched so the Habs can play Dadonov & Hoffman... Is there any worse indightment of his level of effort?

He's a complete waste of assets. There are vastly better TDL options than him. Calgary is one of the very few playoff bound teams that can accrue a relevant amount of cap space.

Instead, when someone gets hurt, sick, or suspended, we will call up one of the guys that performed well in camp (ie Zary or Phillips) and they will get a chance to earn a full time spot. The exact same way Mangiapane and Dube joined the roster. Then when the TDL comes Calgary should make a big splash for an actual top 6 difference maker

I’d prefer Dadonov 50% Retained since he’s a RW, has Experience playing with Huberdeau, has been Healthier and he’s Cheaper, but if Huberdeau gave Treliving & Sutter the thumbs up on Drouin, I’d consider him @ 50% retained. He’s still a Young, Good Sized and a Skilled Play Maker. Maybe he’s just done in MTL and needs a Coach like Sutter to get the most out of him.

Would definitely be a gamble but if we could upgrade our 2nd Round Pick to MTL’s 2nd Round Pick and sent Kylington, who were not using anyways, with only this season remaining on both their contracts, it’s not a huge gamble as long as they come 50% retained.

Dadonov has shown he can produce with Huberdeau and Drouin has shown he can produce in the Playoffs. They don’t suck, they’re just not worth $5mil+/yr

You said in another thread that CGY can’t and won’t land any Big Names at the Trade Deadline, so what would be the alternative available options!?

You wouldn’t consider Dadonov or Drouin at all if they came 50% retained!?

The guy showed up to camp out of shape. He is not unaware what's on the line this season. I get that he was re-habing his wrist so it's hard to work the upper body... But he showed up out of shape...

Its like getting the finish line and giving up
We didnt endur Drouin over buying him out to do what you suggested.
Reality is Supply vs Demand at a TDL with up to 20 teams all overpaying for any bodies they can get.
Drouin as a pending UFA becomes appealing for many

Before you cry injuries like you have in the past
Hanzal off while on IR was traded for a 1st , 2nd and a 4th i think it was came off IR for like a month or two then out for the season.
Timmonen traded on IR for two 2nd's won the Stanley cup playing in the Finals to help secure the Cup and get his name on the Cup
Plekanec battling to stay healthy all year having his career worst year in what would be his last full NHL season got a 2nd and 2 prospects flipped for Kulak
Eric Staal pretty much the same story as Plekanec but that was his final season the year he was traded to MTL for a 2nd and a 4th round pick

TDL is Supply vs Demand
Only way that they wont overpay for guys even as banged up as Drouin is if there's a dozen + rebuilding NHL teams .
That's not the case as there's only 3 rebuilding teams capable of taking cap dumps and another 5 in the middle or end of their rebuild some making moves already trying to force it.
This year those selling will get overpiad way more then last year because the Demand is set to be much higher

Beyond that MTL NEEDS a return for Drouin for Molson to save face
His French First BS that only is enforced under Molson as Gillette famously told Quebec Politicians he just ignores them .
Even the Bronfmans who built the 1970s dynasty ignored the French First mandate's to build a cup team.

My Point is Molson cant have another French Player he overpaid for bust on him or leave without a return.
He NEEDS Hughes to flip Drouin even if its for a Bellows type 1 for 1 he needs a win in the media
Bellows would give him a 2nd Generation habs player to talk all about his dad and growing up around the 1993 team
During a rebuild that type of distraction buys Molson time and goodwill

That trade may never happen but my point is no matter how small the return MTL needs a clear win

Issue is as he gets older he gets heavier and his game changes.
He's not making the change from Speed based only to a Byron approach of managing it sparingly.
Byron increased his hockey IQ working on his stick positioning learning how to cut off shooting lanes more effectively increasing his value from Waiver Wire Worthy to Core Veteran Leader.

Drouin needs to kill his dreams of being top 6 and just focus on how to stay a NHL level hockey player.
He finally needs to learn how to play defense smart and not just rely on his speed to give him the edge
I watched him play since Junior and same as Danault who was actually faster then Drouin in Junior , He'll have to make a choice
Danault changed everything about his game and became a top 6 NHL Center by seeking out the jobs no one else wanted to or could not do.
Anyone can learn to skate fast but High Level Hockey IQ that's not as common as you'd think

What a pass tonight though. Don't think there are many on the Habs who could make that pass beyond Suzuki & Drouin. It's a little too little too late for me, because he was backing down from contact all night, but I am happy if he puts up some points like that and we can actually get a return for him.

I mean we've seen Vegas trade Pacioretty with Coghlun for future considerations and they are both good players. Moving 5.5M in cap space is worth a lot and gives you plenty of options. I'm not saying if we have to retain AND get nothing. Im saying if we retain nothing, i'd be perfectly fine with a conditional pick, which coincidently will be pretty much what he'll get even at the deadline anyway. If he plays well, we get something, if he doesn't no big loss.

There are literally 4 teams in the NHL right now that can just straight up take Drouin of the Habs hands. I'd be willing to bet my life savings not a single team would spend a dime to take Drouin at full cost, even at the deadline. At 50% retained maybe like what a 4th rounder? Drouins closest comparable from last TDL was Max Domi and he was essentially traded for a 3rd rounder.

I'd argue, that removing 5.5M in cap and then using that 5.5M in cap space to take on other team cap burdens would yield a better return than simply keeping Drouin.

including Drouin 9 passes outta 10
Truthfully though it was a nice pass but Monahan's was nicer
Caufield TBH his first playoffs had some of the slickest and nicest pass's i seen that year.
The pass to Toffoli to win the game vs PIT was my favorite

Beyond that though you're right our options are limited for slick passes like this.
Beck was actually the most lethal in camp at 2 line pass's as well as leading the camp in faceoff wins fresh out the draft.(takes draws with both hands its slick)
Its why i miss Toffoli as he was amazing at springing guys loose as he'd always put the puck where they were going not where they were.

True but Patches wasnt on LTIR as like Weber and Price he was keeping his GM in the dark.
GM got annoyed and stopped waiting for an answer as being cap compliant in a Eichel world was more important at the time.

Mcdonugh was a Cap dump and got paid despite his term and cap
He wasnt facing a possibly career ending injury and if he does make it back he'll be a fraction of the player he was like Karlsson was.
Those injureies even if they do heal never return to their former strength ever as a rule
You show me 1 time it did i'll be shocked then list 10 times it didnt

This make moving Pacioretty a rough call given he was already increasingly missing more games each year due to injury.
Despite being roughly around scoring in 90% of the games he skated since leaving his body's been breaking down on him .
If he was off for the full year i think VGK would have left him on LTIR and re-evaluated signing him in the summer.
Issue is he's set to return around the TDL or just before and he'll not be at 100% for atleast the first month he's back.
That's a hard sell for any team up against the cap no matter how much you like them
