Is it wrong to say that Romanov was traded for a 1st

Détails additionnels:
I'm into an argument with a user who says it's a fallacy that Romanov was traded for a 1st because the 1st was subsequently flipped for Dach.

Is it really false that Hughes acquired a 1st for Romanov?

They decided to flip it afterwards, and since it's not a real three-way but two subsequent trades with an asset in common, they could have just kept the pick.

I thought the rumor was MTL really wanted Dach, CHI told them they needed a pick in the range of the Isles pick and that’s when MTL contacted Lou saying what would it take to get the pick and he said Romanov.

Yeah they could’ve gotten a first but they wanted Dach more

I mean technically, if Dach failed his physical that trade would be voided and Romanov still would have been traded to the Isles

I 100% would’ve taken Nazar/Lekkerimaki/Kemell over Dach especially as a rebuilding teqm.

That was my point as well, but I'm being told that it's Romanov for Dach - not Romanov for 1st for Dach, which I think is wrong. There is no link between NYI and CHI that make it a three-way, so it's two different trades.

Different trades yes, but they will be forever linked. Romanov may never have been on the Isles radar as available until MTL reached out asking if they would move their 1st pick.

I haven’t liked watching Kemell at world juniors, but he is younger than most guys there. I just wish he wasn’t so soft tbh.

In the past two years Montreal has let the 3rd overall pick in the 2018 draft walk and traded for the 3rd overall pick in the 2019 draft. If Dach doesn’t pan out this is gonna be a really bad look.

BTW this is unrelated but I’ve been so impressed by Grieg, Jarvante and even Kleven this tourney. Future looks much brighter in Ottawa rn.

You are correct. The transactions are linked because Montreal flipped the pick right back out but they are two separate deals. CF even has them listed as two different trades: First, Montreal send Alex Romanov & 98OA to the Islanders for 13OA; then they send 13OA & 66OA to Chicago for Dach. I could mayyyyyybe see a way to connect the two if it was literally 13OA for Romanov straight up, then Dach for 13OA straight up as well, but the fact that Montreal added an extra pick each time and there was no asset being sent between Chicago and the Islanders makes it two completely independent transactions to me.

I mean technically yes they got a 1st for Romanov, value wise they kicked a 4th rd pick with him to get that so the overall value theoretically wasn’t a 1st but that’s some lawyer speak in my opinion. Yes they got a 1st for Romanov.

Greig looks like he’s done with that injury. But yeah he’s always been the Sens 3rd best prospect after Sanderson and Pinto. I always thought he’d end up as a 2nd line winger but I feel like he might be a very good centre. Good problem to have.

Jarventie kinda went under the radar . I keep thinking he’s like 22. But he just turned 20 like last week and played his entire AHL season being 19. That rarely happens. He had 33pts in 70 games which is alright for a 19 year old and who didn’t have any good centre to play with. If Greig and Jarventie play together this year, they could be special

Yeah that's what I was saying in the argument, all that started because I said Hughes acquired four 1sts (Toffoli, Chiarot, Romanov, Monahan) compared to Bergevin's single 1st (Kotkaniemi offersheet).

Then I was told he didn't acquire one of those because he flipped it.

That is correct. If it was a three-way trade with MTL getting Dach, NYI getting Romanov and CHI acquiring the 1st, then they didn't acquire it. Here, they made two separate trades.

I would say you are right because you are. He got 1st rd picks in all those trades

Exactly. But this does seem to me like Montreal is trying to rush the rebuild a little bit. It’s not that big of an issue but let’s say instead of 5 years, they’re trying to do it in 3

yeah i mean its not like Dach is 25 (see the Dvorak trade last year which was a mistake) but after the Kotkaniemi debacle and how crazy similar their careers have started i was like here we go again but, hoping a new brass and org player development philosophy gets Dach back on track
