For sure.
And I still don't get enough respect.

Respect is earned. The fact that you think you don’t get enough of it means you’re not worthy of it

He's become an average defender. He's not stellar or anything, but people don't seem to realize he's improved at it every year

seems pretty stagnant tbh

if he gets back to driving offense like he did in his rookie season, his defense is good enough.

not having to drag around whatever ECHLer the canucks can pay the least would help with that presumably. It might even help him improve some aspects of his defensive game

Evolving-Hockey has significantly better numbers, and this is where JFresh used to take his stats from until he couldn't. Also, I think the numbers would look better if paired with someone remotely close to a top 4D not named Luke Schenn.

The "can't defend" label will stick on Quinn Hughes forever

2020-2021 season will probably tank his stats for the rest of his career. He was much much much better this season. He is only 22 so there is no reason he can’t be better

after Tanev’s departure, the Canucks right side D consisted of: Tyler Myers, Travis Hamonic, Jordie Benn, Tucker Poolman, Kyle Burroughs, Noah Juulsen, and Luke Schenn

What an abundance of elite defensemen!

yeah but they don’t post a percentage number on twitter for me to base my entire opinion of every hockey player on 😤😤

fr tho idk how I’m supposed to take their data into account without paying for it, which I don’t do. So I’ll use whatever jfresh posts on twitter, dom’s cards because I sub to the athletic, and whatever digging I feel like doing on natural stat trick or moneypuck as far as advanced stats go, to support the eye test and scouting reports, and I haven’t yet seen anything to support him being good at denying zone entries, and he’s not got the size to be an effective in-zone defender that boxes guys out. Good at puck retrievals though, presumably because he can use his speed to get there first and carry it out. It doesn’t help that one of the only canucks games I remember watching this year was a sh*tshow against philly where literally not a single defenseman on either team ever at any point in time did a single thing right lmao

Unfortunately the best we can do is one Luke Schenn. Maybe a Tyler Myers if we are feeling extra spicy

The line chart on the right shows that his defensive ability has pretty much stayed at the same level for the last 3 years. It’s his offensive ability that is all over the place and would benefit by having a top 4 calibre partner. Although not having to cover for a bum might improve his defense as well now that he’s older, we’ll have to actually see him play with a top 4 calibre partner to see if that’s true, whereas we can see that when he had one as a rookie, his offense was elite, and that’s probably reasonable to expect if the canucks could give him a helping hand instead of a boat anchor

Those charts aren’t exactly accurate. Hughes will put up points no matter who his partner is. Put up 68 points in 80 games playing with Luke Schenn. The reason we need a defensive d man with him is so he is more free to do what he is good at. Create offense. If I were Hughes, I don’t know how secure I would be to make a rush when a guy like Travis Hamonic is my partner. Also, Hughes most definitely improved his defensive play this season. It’s been such a big difference. You can tel both by the eye test, and stats.

Our best RHD. Stats were definitely better this year but you know our defense is in shambles when Myers is considered our best RHd

I mean the stats don’t really bear it out. Dom had him going from slightly below average to slightly above average, but he also weights relative to team, and it’s not difficult to look above average when compared to the other Canucks D lol. Jfresh obviously had him stagnant, mostly due to poor zone entry denial/rush defense. But also on the offensive side, that’s his even strength play-driving, not point production. I think we’re on the same side in saying that a better D will improve his EV offense though. 31 of his points came on the PP. There’s really no reason he can’t get 50 even strength points every year too, and a more reliable partner would help with that. His defensive peak will be hard to determine until he gets that partner, because so far the only time he had a good partner, he didn’t do great defensively. He should be better now, but by how much is the question. Being an elite offensive guy and even average defensively would be great, but he can still get away with being mediocre defensively if that’s really all his ability is.
