In a buyers market saturated with good forwards depth guys like Namestnikov won't get much more than a 3rd or 4th.

It's meant to be a somewhat tongue-in-cheek / satirical projection based on Sakic's deadline last year where he acquired Soderberg for a throw-away prospect (Rolston), Nemeth (50%) for a 4th, and Dubnyk for a 5th + capdump (Pateryn).

A 3rd isn't bad but it won't get you any retention since Detroit only 2 spots left. If no one wants to give that up he is playing really well right now and it wouldn't be a bad move to keep him.

Namestnikov is from Michigan, so chances are that he'll resign with Detroit anyways even if he's moved at the deadline.

These players want to win as well, and I'm sure Vlad wouldn't be too thrilled when he finds out that he wasn't given a chance to play for a cup because Stevie Y insisted on getting a 3rd instead of a 4th for him from a team he already has friends on from the cup run in the bubble.

Last time the market was more of a sellers market and Sakic patiently outwaited Dorion and made the trade at the last minute. This year is shaping up to be a saturated market that will very much favour buying teams, given that the divide between buyers and sellers is already pretty clear, especially in the east. Most selling teams are also flush with pending UFA's due to an increase in shorter-term contracts being handed out in the last couple of years.

Yzerman wouldn't knuckle under to Sakic with Bernier at last year's trade deadline. He won't do so with Namestnikov either.

Find a K-Mart GM to do business with. Yzerman isn't one.

I don't recall Sakic ever seriously bidding for Bernier last year. Also, Sakic managed to get Yzerman to retain half on Nemeth for a 4th, so the theory that Yzerman somehow has Sakic knuckled in negotiations doesn't really hold up.

If we're only offered a 4th (closer to being an early 5th in this case) then yeah just keep Namestnikov and re-sign him.

No Namestnikov is from Zhukovskiy, Russia he moved to Michigan when he was 4 to live with his uncle Slava Kozlov. Who won 2 cups with Yzerman.

Yes after 25 straight seasons in the Playoffs and 3 cups during that run. Correct me if I'm wrong but when Colorado had their good run around that same time they only won 2 cups.

Detroit won 4 cups (97, 98, 2002, and 2008), unfortunately grin
