the nordiques topped out at 5 year playoffs drought. the father back you go the worse it gets for the wings. there's a 17 year stretch where they only make the playoffs twice.

Namestnikov is having a much better season than in years past. He's a 20 goal scorer this year. He can play all fwd positions up and down the line up. He's good in the locker room and plays with energy and heart. Guys like that bring more than a 4th especially with retention. Expect to pay a 2nd or equivalent prospect.

You're not wrong, but Namestnikov's name won't be near the top of the list of rental options in what will be a buyers market due to how many teams are already clear sellers and how many UFA's there are. There's only so many contenders and draft picks to go around.

he's not really scoring a whole lot more than when he was traded the last 2 times. a 2nd seems crazy. besides he's not going to get top 6 minutes outside of detroit so his scoring is going to drop.

I agree a 2nd seems a bit high in this market. That said, his caphit is $2m this time around (or $1m at 50% retained), as opposed to $3.25m each of the two times he was traded previously, which should make him easier for teams with very little capspace to fit him in and thus open the market up a little bit more than before.

I don't really have a preference, but Sakic has precedent with acquiring players who are already familiar with the team and Bednar's system (eg. Nemeth and Soderberg) so I think he'd go for him if given a choice. Namestnikov already showed that he worked well in Colorado so is less of a question mark than a complete new guy like Jarnkrok.
