No, let Mittelstadt's line be the matchup line and ensure Ritchie can feel his way into the league against lesser opposition, and then gradually move him up to the second line as he earns opportunities.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Xqb15a</b></div><div>I agree with C being more valuable but part of giving Colton $4M as 3C was the plan that RyJo would work out at 2c therefore having about $8M committed to 2c 3C, Mittlestadt is going to blow that model up and rightfully so.
By no means am I advocating trading Colton though some tough choices are coming.
With Ritchie, and this is strictly my opinion, I think COL has learned the lesson you can’t expect a 19yr old that you have top 6 C expectations to develop as a top 6 C playing bottom 6 winger minutes. Play him a full season in the AHL playing the role there you want him to play in the NHL. Don’t kill the kid having him play a role he hasn’t played probably at all in his hockey career let him continue to develop to his ceiling not his floor and it’s not like you don’t have options on the wing internally with Foudy, Olausson and Kovalenko. And yes COL has forced that on guys like Newhook in the past and it didn’t work out, learn from past mistakes.
As for Wood they gave him a 6 yr deal for a reason so I really wonder if they don’t want him to be that winger that can help anchor the bottom 6 and his contract gets more and more bearable as the cap goes up because there is a decent chance someone poaches LOC in the summer of 25.</div></div>
Ritchie isn't allowed to play in the AHL next year per the NHL/juniors rules. So it's either NHL or back to juniors for him where he's already a dominant top 5 scorer and has little to learn. The Avs sent Byram back to juniors after a similarly dominant season though so maybe they'd be comfortable doing the same with Ritchie. I'd expect them to give him a good look in camp though either way.
Good point on Mittelstadt changing the cap structure, that's definitely a significant change. That extra $2m will need to be found somewhere. If you move Colton though who plays 3C? Money probably needs to come off the wing first looking at the roster.

I guess if it's for FC or a mid-round pick, a team that needs bottom-six help might be interested. Didn't sound like the Avs were keen on bringing Ritchie in next year; probably give him another year in junior. Also doubt Behrens gets to the NHL without going through the AHL first so, good luck to him with that, LOL.</div></div>
You could replace Ritchie with a cheap vet or even Duhaime maybe. Same with Behrens. Point here is the caphits.

Colton plays C which makes him more important to the Avs than a winger like Wood.
Avs aren't afraid of playing young players if they deem them to be ready. Ritchie should get a chance to make the team and get 9 games in camp, and if he's good enough he'll stay.

Lehky has shown he can play first line so we could get a better 3C and move colton to wing.</div></div>
I agree with you. If Landeskog doesn't return the Avs probably don't trade anyone and just use that capspace on an UFA instead.

Yeah pretty much this. They won't move Girard for a rental, it would be an off-season trade if he gets moved.
There would be interest in Tanev but very doubtful about Zadorov as he never meshed with Bednars system.

Eww no thanks on that Jost trade that's awful. Rather keep o'Connor easily. No idea why you're adding Foudy to that too. Pass.
Also doubt CMac trades a guy like Tatar who signed a cheap one year deal specifically for a chance at a cup.

The Avs wouldn't necessarily need retention for 2023/24 so sending s contract back would work (eg. Francouz), but the issue is the $2.2m caphit isn't viable for next season when the Avs will be pressed for capspace due to Landeskog probably returning.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>squashmaple</b></div><div>It's not really the contract. The cap is fine in Columbus this season. They just need the roster spot, and there's no point in leaving an NHL caliber defensive D in his mid 20s as a healthy scratch when he could contribute somewhere else. He's just been squeezed out in Columbus between Severson, top prospect Jiricek forcing their hand to give him a roster spot, and Gudbranson bringing important intangibles on top of the same role Peeke would serve.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>squashmaple</b></div><div>Sold. No takebacks.</div></div>
Would CBJ consider retaining a bit, say $500k-750k? That would probably make this viable for Colorado. Or at the very least $225k which is the minimum amount they'd need retained without having to move anyone off their current roster (not counting Francouz on LTIR)

Niemela
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>Yeah, for sure just meant that Girard is probably not the type of defender that Treliving would be looking for, I guess it really depends on if he adds someone or not in the current season, but physicality (could be a 5-7th D) is something he's looking to add - he wanted Desharnais from EDM, and size in general is something he likes on the blue line. I don't think that automatically disqualifies Girard but because the Leafs already have a smallish defense (Rielly 6'1, McCabe 6'1, Liljegren 6'0, Timmins 6'2 -- Brodie 6'1, Klingberg 6'3, Giordano 6'1), I don't think Girard would be a trade target. GiggywithGibby made the counterpoint that Niemela is basically the same size as Girard, so I was just pointing out that Treliving wasn't acquiring Niemela, wasn't saying that he would have the same impact. Also, if Brodie is gone next year there would be a need for a DFD or a TWD that is more defensive than offensive.</div></div>
For the same reasons you outlined that would imply that Treliving would be very likely to trade Niemela (regardless of whether it is for Girard or not). What do you think Niemela's value would be in isolation right now?

I do think they will be cheap on defense, because Klingber's money will basically just go to Nylander (if signed), Bertuzzi probably gets something similar or more, same with Domi. If they don't re-up one (or more of those guys there could be money to go around). The other thing is if they don't re-sign Samsonov they will get some money. Brodie coming off the books isn't really extra money imo, since they will at least need to pay a replacement for Brodie assuming they don't re-up him for around 3M. If Brodie has fallen off (starting to really seem like it) or just is not re-signed, then they need to be spending to replace their top defensive defenseman if someone is available (like Pesce) in FA. If not they probably get someone who is physical like Zadorov.</div></div>
Niemela may be around the same size as Girard but let's not pretend like he's at Girard's level, at least not yet. Girard is a proven commodity, Niemela has a lot to prove to get to Girard's level as a top 4 Dman.
