TIMO MEIER
“As of Dec. 12, Timo Meier paces the San Jose Sharks in most offensive categories, both obvious (assists, points, shots) and underlying (slot shots, cycle chances, forecheck chances). This, despite missing five games because of being in COVID protocol.
League-wide, according to Evolving Hockey, Meier is leading all NHL forwards with 14.73 Shots Per 60 minutes.” - NBCSN
Meier has seen high shot totals before - but currently he is the catalyst to the Sharks forward group and Karlsson has been doing his lifting on the back end. Mixing in players like Hertl, Dahlen, Barabanov have provided the Sharks with a quality forward unit - to pair with a solid back end lead by Ferraro, Karlsson, Burns, and Middleton.
But without Meier, this teams record would not be as good.
NICK BONINO
Bonino currently leads all forwards in the NHL in blocked shots (as mentioned above Ferraro leads the league in blocks).
“That, by the way, is what Bonino has been doing his entire career. From 2013-21, no forward has blocked more shots than the gritty centerman: In fact, in that time period, he's the only forward to have blocked more than 600 shots. Just behind Bonino's 605 Blocked Shots is ex-Anaheim Ducks teammate Ryan Getzlaf's 577.” - NBCSN
Overall Bob Boughner has really done a great job - and so have the players. Despite many other deserving candidates (like Sutter); Bob Boughner deserves a nomination at least for what he’s done in SJS by enabling the team to stick to a tighter defensive system and providing better strategies and overall team play. Key players have been playing lights out (Meier, Reimer (goat), Karlsson, Ferraro, Barabanov for example) but Bob Boughner deserves credit (despite the grief SJS fans gave him last year, he deserves some love).
