You’re essentially moving Oloffson to move up 20ish picks in the draft which doesn’t make sense to me. Drop the second going back at least

Edmonton declines. They need a veteran 1B and Koskinen has shown he's capable of being this - why on earth would they move him out at all let alone with a 1st round pick??

Wow, there's so much here to disassemble... but I just want to focus on one thing:

"Girgensons is given a chance to shine and return to his all star performance level."

Hahaha what??? When was that level achieved? In the USHL?

Leafs dont really have a use for Olofsson. Hes a powerplay merchant traded to a team with no room on its power play.

Your Eichel trade is rather unreasonble. Just looking at what you then valued Monahan at, you traded Eichel for 2 1sts, 2 well regarded young players and Jake DeBrusk. Thats higher than even the rumored asking price of the Sabres which no team has been willing to meet.

Lucic doesn't waive for Buffalo....and certainly doesn't waive to bought out.
Leafs can't afford Olofsson, not they particularly would want him.

At this point its highly unlikely Koskinen will be moved before the season begins, and just slightly less unlikely he could be moved at all. He's the best of the limited options available to the Oilers and there are probably only two scenarios in which it makes sense to move him for a draft pick.

    1. Stalock plays the best hockey of his career and is much better than Koskinen. This would be ideal for Edmonton, but would bring into question the need to package that 1st round pick. Buffalo is in real jeopardy of starting the season under the salary cap floor, they need a few inflated contracts in order to avoid penalties. If Edmonton doesn't need Koskinen, they would be doing the Sabers a favor in sending him to Buffalo. Why would Edmonton feel compelled to add a 1st round pick? Under these circumstances, I think Koskinen for Buffalo's 3rd round pick would be a fair exchange.

    2. Holland has already set up a separate deal for a better goaltender. This would be a good outcome, but it is likely the 2022 1st round pick would be a necessary piece of the acquisition. In that case, the pick would not be available to send to Buffalo, and should the Sabers demand the 2nd round pick, the overall cost of upgrading Edmonton's goaltending may become so high that they are better off sticking with Koskinen. Under these circumstances, its difficult to imagine a deal could be worked out. However, perhaps a lower draft pick and a low value contract (something they can bury) heading back to Edmonton makes it work.

Lucic has both no movement and no trade clauses in his contract, he'd have to agree to go to Buffalo. That seems unlikely, but if he did then the Sabers would have to include him on their roster until the next buyout window opens. Given his no movement clause, Lucic cannot be placed on waivers, unless he agrees. So, it is highly unlikely Buffalo would get any relief from his full cap hit. That's not terrible, since the Sabers need to hit the salary cap floor. However, Lucic's presence would take up a roster spot and could block a prospect from gaining NHL time and experience. There is a positive though, Lucic is a great team mate and his presence does offer some measure of protection for younger players.

Over the past two years he posted a .916 save percentage in all situations with normal usage. That's plenty capable for me, and better than any of the Leaf's goaltenders managed.

How does a guy have a .917 S% two seasons ago and a .899 S% last season somehow have a .916% over the past two seasons? Me thinks your math is off a little.

The key here is reading my original statement, which includes the phrase "with normal usage".

    Wow great discussions.
All constructive feed back, just the way I like it.
Let me begin, Lucic will not be traded to Buffalo.
I was attempting to model the Orpik deal, but that was done during the buy out period.
Second, it appears the Koskinen trade is a dead deal
I saw similar deals where he was traded with a first, I added the second going back to make the deal better and more equitable deal.
I presumed Edmonton needed cap space and I thought he may be the best cap casualty due to his salary and performance.
@CD282 is absolutely adamant that he is a very good BU GK and using resources to move him will not happen.
I am sure other teams may want to move players still for cap.
Third, circling back to the Calgary trade, remember two of the seconds were for taking Lucic's salary.
So if the 2nds, Lucic and Buffalo pick is removed it becomes a trade that has been thrashed around many times on CF.
Fourth, on the trade to Boston, Buffalo is retaining part of his salary, and taking on an underperforming, extraneous LW.
I am not saying DeBrusk has no value, just he and the third are added for retaining Monahan's salary.
I suppose if we remove the 3rd it would be closer as DeBrusk and Monahan would have nearly equal cap hits.
So, IMO these trades are templates of what could happen:
Arizona got a 2nd for taking Shayne Gostisbehere and the potential of multiple seconds for taking Andrew Ladd.
Buffalo got a 5th for taking Butcher.
Edmonton may still be a trading partner if they wish to move Kassian.
I would imagine they may have better use for $3,000,000 of cap space than a 2 goal forward.

I think I got you all.
    Have a great day.
    Good chatting with you.

I think you are correct, but most think this trade is too much for Olofsson, LOL.

You convinced me, I think there will be other teams who make that trade as a second is returned as well.

Yes bit tongue in cheek. do you remember when all of Latvia got together 2014 voted him onto the all star team?

OK fair enough, certainly on Lucic, but I think there will other teams that would make that Olofsson trade.

Beyond a doubt the best comment on the post and one of the best I ever have read. I cannot agree with you more, thank you very much.

You have seen Koskinen play right?...
Well, it appeared to be fair trade to me, but what do I know.

    EDIT: @Ledge_And_Dairy
Removing Lucic does not effect the over picture.

While 6 first round picks next year may be a bridge too far, but I think 5 are a real possibility.
I can see one from the Flames and one from Boston similar to the scenario in this posted trade.
As I said getting DeBrusk makes Olofsson tradeable, trading a second with Victor could possibly be the fifth first.

Just curious - how to you actually define normal usage? What does inhumane workload and travel actually mean? I think Koskinen can be serviceable but I don’t understand how it makes sense to cherry pick games he’s played in to make a point.

There was one stretch where he played 12 games in 24 nights, while traveling thousands of miles through 4 timezones. As far as I know no goalie in the history of the league has ever had to play through a schedule that demanding, so it's not fair to look at his numbers during that stretch and say "he's that guy", which a lot of posters here are doing.

When playing with a normal 1B workload (generally 40-50% of the starts) over the past 2 seasons he has performed above average, posting a. 916 save percentage.

Edmonton wouldn't pay a first to move koskinen, they refuse to. He's gotta be part of a deal for another goalie or they just keep him and they would pay a combination of other picks instead. They would rather trade 3 Years of second round picks than even 1 first.

Fair enough. I didn’t understand the workload you were talking about enough so that’s helpful. Not sure if I’d completely discount it but I see your point and it’s likely he bounces back under the right circumstances.

Cap space for this season is basically moot now that most of the big UFA's are gone, not that Lucic would ever okay a deal to Buffalo. Calgary is stuck with Lucic for at least 1 more season.
Koskinen to Buffalo is possible, considering how tight the Oil are against the cap, and the atrocious state of Buffalos goaltending, but Edm shouldnt have to throw in that much.
