Which player do we think will be the first to surpass McDavid's cap hit?

For me its a toss up between MacKinnon (if he decides not to take a discount) and Barkov (if he leaves Florida)

Tarasenko and the Blues will wait till the deadline to make a move should he still desire a trade. No good offers were presented to Armstrong and Tarasenko does not want to decrease his image and value within the NHL.

Eichel trade talks went quiet again. Seems like if he is moved it will be at next years draft.

The only 4 options would be Barkov, MacKinnon, Matthews, and Draisaitl. But because the cap will likely be relatively flat until 26-27, there’s a decent chance that the first person to surpass McDavid is McDavid. (Whose contract is up in 2026)

I’d say Matthews or McDavid’s next contract

Im looking at Barkov as the earliest one that we may get to see next summer. With his improvements at both ends would not be surprised if next season we hear someone offered him 13 mill on open market.

So I imagine for both Eichel and Tarasenko, the GM hopes they play, and with the play time comes offers that are worthwhile, I imagine Senko will play, do good and either change his opinion or get traded since there’ll be suitors, Eichel though, it may come to a bloody end

If Tarasenko can do well for them and not get hurt someone at the deadline will give them a good deal 100%. Or who knows he may even decide to stay

As for Eichel's situation its so messed up. With the injury dilemma teams are hesitant to commit to more than just inquires at this point. Until he either does the surgery or plays I don't think we will see him traded till next draft. Maybe at the deadline but that's doubtful. Buffalo should have honestly let him have the surgery earlier and by now he would have rehabbed enough to play or been close enough to start maybe in November but no Adams decided nah lets wait thins out.

Mackinnon or Matthews I'd say. Possibly even McDavid. Good as Barkov is, I have a very hard time seeing him be the highest payed, I don't think he's worth 13 mil.

For someone to pass McDavid we either need
A) one of the best players in the league
or
B) a questionable gm and a very good player with a resume.

My dollar is (B) that Patrick Kane's next contract is short term 13mil.

I think Tarasenko is going to regress even more. It’s going to be extremely difficult to get a team to trade significant assets for him.

Shane Wright...that might not be a crazy one if he comes out and goes for a ppg in his first 3 seasons.

No way Kane makes 13 on his next deal, he probably won’t even make what he does now, he’ll regress though he may be offered on Ovi type deal based on past performances with way too much term
