Players that WAIVED NMC before 2017 expansion draft

Description
Two.

That's it.

2017
Heading into the 2017 expansion draft, there were 68 players with No Movement Clauses (NMC) as determined by the league. NMC clause means that player must be protected by their team in the expansion draft.

68 players with NMC
1 agreed to waive NMC and was selected by Vegas (Fleury)
1 agreed to waive NMC and was not selected (Enstrom)
3 declined to waive NMC and were bought out before expansion draft
3 were give injury exemptions and did not have to be protected.
60 others with NMC were protected by team in expansion draft.

In other words, only 3% of those with NMC agreed to waive and 88% of players with NMC were on teams protection lists. The other 9% were either bought out or given injury exemption.

(the players below show some of the examples - did not list all the players who had NMC but were not asked to waive)

2020
If you think your team's NMC player will waive "to help the team", it is HIGHLY unlikely. If we were to use 2017 as a guide, there is about a 3% chance that player will waive.

This year there are *at least* 54 players with NMC. The final list not released and there will be some names on there that public media sources do not have.

There are 4 possible injury exemptions (Toews, Seabrook, Johnson, Bishop)

A few will be bought out, a couple may waive, but most will be protected.

****Feedback below****
Please list your teams NMC players and the likely outcome for each:

1. Protected in expansion draft
2. Waive NMC
3. Granted injury exemption
4. Bought out

I will make a separate list for 2021 players with NMC

NMCs/M-NTC/NTC are cancers to the league. There's literally no reason for them to exist, ABOLISH THEM

In general it seems like this applies to many things

I did a brief tally of UFAs re-signing with their team

It was like 8% 😬

I don't remember the Bruins asking Chara to waive his NMC (and not sure why they would have asked)

There are a few things that could motivate it though:

Players stuck in a ****ty market; if you're losing in Buffalo without a rebuild in sight, or Ottawa, or wherever you're not winning and you're especially an aging player with some star power, it makes sense IMO. On the other hand, these teams probably don't have that many players to protect in the first place.

Players that are so sure they won't get picked that they try to help their team keep their roster competitive; Maybe Suter/Parise, maybe someone on a sub-optimal contract for the Islanders, maybe guys like Kris Russell? Enström waived, but didn't get picked. Maybe the reasoning is he didn't care to stay in Winnipeg of all places, but maybe he saw a chance to keep the roster intact and compete.

And finally, maybe not that likely, but what about players that saw the Vegas experiment go really well and are thinking "maybe this is my chance for a fresh start where I might have a chance to win". I didn't really think of an example, but like.. Cam Atkinson? Depending on CBJ's direction and desire to keep him.

I guess Tyler johnson could fit there too, or in some "hometown" category that doesn't really stretch outside of him. I do suspect Seattle will select him, but probably with some extra incentive attached.

Edit: Also, good post! This stuff is important to both analyze and keep in mind with the exp.draft coming up!

I agree, not any recollection of this happening nor a reason why they would have.

Virtually all players won't waive because they don't want to go to a poor expansion (though Vegas blows that theory out of the water)
Think Parise will waive because he knows he won't be selected. Suter might do the same thing, so Dumba can be protected. Their contracts make it unlikely they won't be taken.
Carey Price, doubt if he would be selected, but m,aybe he would enjoy a change of teams
Lucic, likely won't be selected, but there isn't that much holding him in Calgary from a team aspect.

Parise, Price, Lucic, Erik Johnson would be my guys who would waive.

Petry, Price, and Gallagher are the NMCs for the Canadiens, I don't see any of them waiving. I wouldn't be surprised if Montreal threw an incentive to pick someone other than Allen though.

Lucic will waive, it's expected EJ will waive his as well for COL.

I wonder if Guerrin asks Parise to waive his NMC, but I doubt he waives it anyways.

Wheeler is the only NMC for WPG, and they're not asking him to waive it at all

Most of the names above were expected to waive in 2017...some more than others.
I am guessing maybe 1 of the 4 you listed waives.

There are expected to be few trades this time around as well.
That is one lesson people learned from 2017.

Lucic maybe.
EJ gets bought out.
Parise declines.
Wheeler would be protected anyway.
Just my guess.

And now vegas is one of, if not the most desirable destination in the league. Crazy.

Ya but as long as it’s a tool players will use it as leverage. Let’s say theres some awesome UFA on the market and you’re a GM that doesn’t like giving out NMCs is bidding against another team that doesn’t care about NMCs. Guess who’s breaking their rule and giving one out?

For them to go into decline, the league has to do something.

Competitive team, no state income tax, low property tax, and relatively low sales tax, plus world class golfing and shows will do that. Not to mention skiing and what not only a few hours away.

The gap between high tax states and low tax states is only going to increase too.

I imagine one of these days we will see teams in FL, NV, NC, TX and TN getting better while teams in CA, IL getting worse.

(oh, wait)
