Yeah, if only it were that easy to get rid of a bad contract. His contract was heavily overpaid, and by the time you even get a chance to trade Marner it wouldn't be for that much.

Ottawa laugh at that offer, They're not giving that up for an overpaid Mitch Marner.

i love when people pretend he's Lucic levels of over paid and that his value is equally impacted.

3 A level young players + a top 5 pick + a top 10 pick + a top 20 pick + 33rd overall fror Marner. Id seriously debate offering that much for anyone in the league

It might not be that bad, but I love how people are so optimistic in a time that no one has cap space that you can just get rid of a 10M contract when he isn't worth it for that much coming back.

The max id offer for Marner is probably Connor Brown + Lassi Thomson and the SJ pick as long as its not top 3

Ottawa is giving up way to much, not trying to insult Marner but he isn't worth this much. You have them giving up their two top prospects in Brannstrom and Formenton and 3 lottery picks for the draft (San Jose pick has the 3rd best odds to win the 2020 draft and Ottawa isn't likely to contend next year so the 2021 pick would most likely be a very high one as well).

Marner is still young and very talented but this trade would lopsided against the Senators

i wouldnt trade Brannstrom or Batherson straight up for Marner. Id trade Formenton and the Isles pick but i think that could be a bit more than id want to pay

the return proposed is high for sure, but the "bad contract, heavily over paid" stuff is as inflated as the return. He's about a million over paid right now and over the course of the contract he will be worth that much for the bulk of the years.

yikes, Marner is significantly more valuable than Brannstrom and Batherson together let alone straight up, and that Islanders pick+ Formenton is laughable. if the contract stated with a 9 instead of a 10 no one would want to trade him for the moon let alone anything approaching that

Based on his advanced stats calculated with his quality of teammates his contract amount per year should be around 5.72M so it's quite a bit more than just a million.

lol, marners an extremely good player, his cap hit + signing bonus reduces his value quite a bit to the other teams, but thats way to much for him very little players actually worth that

Batherson is heading towards being a 1st liner. Brannstrom is going to be almost as good as Quinn, Formenton is almost at a PPG in the AHL at 20 years old, that SJ pick right now is one of Stutzle, Rossi, Drysdale, Raymond, Holtz. That Isles pick could be one of Jarvis, Quinn, Amirov, Bourque, Schneider, that 2021 1st could be a top 5 pick. That 33rd overall could be one of Grans, Peterka, foerster, savoie, Lapierre etc. No thank you.

while Ottawa wouldn't touch this, Marner isn't "heavily" overpaid. Overpaid by maybe 1.5-2M, which isn't an egregious contract for a 22 y/o 94 point scorer. He could very well develop into a player that earns that full value, but he's not "heavily" overpaid

Ill take just Stutzle/Rossi/Drysdale on a 3 year ELC >> Marner. Just that 1 SJ pick

I wouldn't. You'd be hoping that stutzle/rossi could develop into a player like Marner, and even at that its not guaranteed. And all because he makes an extra 1.5 mil on what he should

Marner is a 60pt player that becomes 90 playing with Tavares. EVen if Rossi becomes a 50 pt player, we can spend all that extra money on another player and follow the Blues blueprint instead of spending it all on 1 guy.

except that hes easily a 9 million dollar player, like without a doubt, so if a team is pressed close to the cap and cant find a way to squeeze an extra 1.6 million out of a deal in returned salary or just plain old cap space it probably doesnt work, that i can agree to. However that doesnt mean that that team values him less an is going to give up less to get him, it simply means they dont have the cap room. They also wouldnt have the cap room for McDavid, and couldnt trade for him, even at a cheaper price.
As far as the signing bonus goes, that's horse****. So many player have huge signing bonu (Stamkos 8.5, Kuch 11 mil, Mcdavid 13, Drai 7) that wouldnt lower their value at all. And even if it did the Leafs would 100% wait until july 1st to pay it and then get the value out of the trade.
