<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Spanky227</b></div><div>Yes but that would be for more than 1 year.. for a 1 year prove it contract, that is about right for DeAngelo and high for Lemieux. Look at what Labanc took after seasons of 40 points and 56 points, a 1m 1 year prove it deal.
It's the player betting on improving his performance to obtain a higher contract in year 2. Say DeAngelo puts up 40-50 points this year, he'll make more than 4m in year two which will be better than him signing a 2-2.5m 2 year deal this year. That's exactly what trouba did last year (although he wanted out of WPG also) and he got a 2.5m raise in year 2</div></div>
Without arb rights, short of an offer sheet, they have no options other than sitting out. They can't just sign with another team. If they sign for 1 year they will still be RFA's next season but they will have arbitration right's, giving them leverage to negotiate that higher value, longer term contract.

Apples & oranges. Nylander , a #8 overall pick, put up 61 pts in back to back seasons & still had to hold out till December for a team whose GM consistently stated their young core would be Maple Leafs for a long time, & Butcher was a college free agent coming off a 2 year deal with a team starving for defensemen. The Rangers cap situation, unless they make a trade before the start of the season, sets up a completely different scenario for DeAngelo.

Hopefully they free up some more space and give him $2mill or so. That would still be a good deal for the team, and at least DeAngelo wouldn't feel like he was getting robbed.</div></div>
Everyone wants to give DeAngelo & Lemeiux multi-million, multi year deals when they have no leverage & its in the teams short term interest to give them 1 year qualifiers. They can hold out, but there are other players that can take their place like Fox, Rykov, Hajek, Reunanen, Nieves, McKegg, Fast, Kravtsov Lettieri & DiGuiseppe

The team is cap compliant right now. They bury Smith & Beleskey & they have a little over $3mil in cap space. They sign DeAngelo & Lemeiux, who have no leverage, to 1 year qualifiers of @ $900k, making them RFA's with arb rights next year, & they go into camp with just over $1mil in cap space without "needing" to make a trade. They then wait for teams to realize, through injury or underperformance, that they need a proven vet to improve their lineup & players like Namestnikov, Strome & Kreider become more appealing & the Rangers get a better return. Claesson is just unnecessary.

So Ottawa with $20mil in cap space and a roster that "boasts" forwards like Bobby Ryan, Artem Anisimov, Mikkel Boedker, J.G. Pageau & Anthony Duclair wouldn't have any interest in a versatile player like Namestnikov for 1 year to help bridge the gap while young forwards like Brady Tkachuk & Colin White continue their development? Maybe we change the 2nd to a 3rd or 4th in 2021 but the idea that Vlad has no value unless the Rangers "sweeten" the deal is ridiculous.

Really...why would the Rangers do this trade? They give up a young roster player, 2 prospects & a 2nd round pick for a young roster player + a $5mil cap hit to bury Backes in the minors for 2 years. Gorton should be fired if he makes this trade. Boston should be giving up more for the Rangers to take Backes off their hands.

My bad on Buchnevich. He probably gets 2-3 years at $3.25-$3.5mil. This scenario is for 2020-21 so Namestnikov is UFA if he hasn't been traded. Georgiev & Strome are RFA for 2020-21 so if Strome isn't traded & Shesterkin hasn't forced his way onto the big club making Georgiev expendable, then that will have to be addressed. I haven't heard anything re Kreiders demands except speculation. Hayes got $7mil for 7 yrs from Philly but he's a center & 1 yr younger so I can't see how Kreider could expect as much or more that. Maybe Gorton also sees that 6'3", 230lb wingers with elite speed don't grow on trees.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>delneggs</b></div><div>Buy outs are more expensive than eating 50% salary for two years because they stay on the book for 4 years. They still have to pay Girardi for 4 more years. If they buy out Shatty, the cap hit in year 2 is over $6 million, so no way they do that. He is the most tradeable too. If they buy out anyone, it will be Smith. I personally would look to see what I could get for Kreider because let's face facts, there is no way they will pay him anywhere near what Boston gave Hayes, and that's what Kreider will want. If they can get a 1st round pick, and a good prospect, then I say pull the trigger. Moving him and buying out Smith solves all the cap issues, even with paying Trouba $7.5/year. Not an ideal thing, but better than costly buy outs or trading young kids in my opinion.</div></div>
The team is projected to have $27mil+ in cap space next season with no real "need to" RFA's/UFA's to qualify/re-sign & $56mil+ the following season. Buying out Smith , dealing Namestnikov and/or Strome this season & giving Kreider (who has a skill set they can't replace internally or externally) $7mil for 7 yrs, starting next season, isn't going to handicap the team that much. With potentially 8 or more players on entry level deals in the lineup this year, plus more next year & 16 draft picks for the next 2 drafts, they should have plenty of cap space & assets to continue to add to the roster as necessary.

I know this is all supposed to be for fun but, trading 4 youngish forwards, including a 20 year old 7th overall pick who hasn't had time to really develop, for more young defensemen when the team, overall, is thin on forward prospects & deep with defense prospects, doesn't make sense to me.

The idea is to give the young centers playing time to aid their development. Chytil should have been switched with Strome. This team should be improved, but they're not quite ready to challenge for the cup. Shatty's defensive play is his weakness so putting him 3rd pair seemed to be a better matchup situation.

Easy Way Out
I like keeping Kreider & getting Saarela back (hated seeing him go in E. Staal trade) although Chicago doesn't have cap space for Strome. No other buyouts make sense other than Smith. Namestnikov probably has more value than most think. He's versatile enough to play wing or center, top 6 in a pinch & has a track record of producing when paired with top players (see Tampa Bay).

Get Gusev
I'm not sure replacing Kreider, an experienced 28 yr old 6'3", 225lb power forward with dynamic speed who is your teams only real net front presence, with Gusev, a 27 yr old 5'11", 180lb playmaking wing (redundant with Panarin on the team) who has yet to play in the NHL, makes a lot of sense. If Kaako & Kravtsov were more experienced it might be a different story. If trading Kreider for cap space is the objective, giving Gusev $4mil per and adding Boyle at $1.5mil negates any savings.

Not bad. I like the idea of keeping Kreider. The team is much better with Panarin & Kreider as the top 2 LW's. They could even extend him with $13 mil of space next season when that would kick in & only Georgiev (if he's still on the team), Strome (if they don't move him during the season for some additional cap space) & Nieves as RFA's & Fast UFA next year.

Kulikov Cap Dump From Winnipeg
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Braah</b></div><div>It’s a $825K hit.....</div></div>
I'm speaking from a Rangers perspective.
Yes, Beleskey's hit is $825,000, but you're trading that for Kulikov's which is $3,258,333.
From Capfriendly:
What is a Buried Contract?
Teams do not receive full cap relief when a player on a one-way NHL contract is reassigned to the American Hockey League, or is loaned to a team in another professional league.
The players salary cap hit, minus the sum of the minimum NHL salary for the respective season and $375,000, still counts towards the team’s salary cap total.
The cap hit relief is therefore equal to the minimum salary of the respective season + $375,000:
2019-20: $700,000 + $375,000 = $1,075,000
Beleskey - $1,900,000-$1,075,00 = $825,000
Kulikov - $4,333,333-$1,075,000 = $3,258,333

Ok think I finally got this right...And why do you trade a guy that you can bury in minors for another guy you bury in minors with a much larger cap consequence and same 2020 UFA status? Plus Winnipeg has $22mil in cap space to sign RFA's Laine, Connor & Pionk. They don't need a cap dump.
