Reality check...DeAngelo & Lemieux have ZERO leverage - RFA's with NO arbitration rights - they will sign 1 year qualifiers for @ $900k...period.

Nylander , a #8 overall pick, put up 61 pts in back to back seasons & still had to hold out till December for a team whose GM consistently stated their young core would be Maple Leafs for a long time, & Butcher was a college free agent coming off a 2 year deal with a team starving for defensemen. The Rangers cap situation, unless they make a trade before the start of the season, sets up a completely different scenario for DeAngelo.

deangelo is probably worth between 2.75- 3mill. It’s understandable to have him take a pay cut at around 2.25 mill, but RFA are not expected to just take what’s left - he’ll end up holding out if rangers offer him less than 2 mill. They’ll have to make a trade

Yes but that would be for more than 1 year.. for a 1 year prove it contract, that is about right for DeAngelo and high for Lemieux. Look at what Labanc took after seasons of 40 points and 56 points, a 1m 1 year prove it deal.

It's the player betting on improving his performance to obtain a higher contract in year 2. Say DeAngelo puts up 40-50 points this year, he'll make more than 4m in year two which will be better than him signing a 2-2.5m 2 year deal this year. That's exactly what trouba did last year (although he wanted out of WPG also) and he got a 2.5m raise in year 2

Without arb rights, short of an offer sheet, they have no options other than sitting out. They can't just sign with another team. If they sign for 1 year they will still be RFA's next season but they will have arbitration right's, giving them leverage to negotiate that higher value, longer term contract.
