Would you trade Marner straight up for Virtanen?
No. Vancouver would never do this

To be honest... I think he would. It sucks that he just doesn’t fit on our team. He is certainly committed. Damn near august and he’s still waiting to see if the leafs can afford him. I would actually shoot him the 8 year 4m and let him collect paychecks from robidas island.

Clarkson must be the plan to sign Marner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Random2152</b></div><div>Pretty much. The TL;DR goes something like so:
Leafs could sign Marner in the off season before the trade, the LTIR Horton to be compliant with the cap.
Leafs could NOT sign Marner if he held out before the trade because we need the Horton LTIR in order to do it. The problem is that due to the way LTIR works, we couldnt use the Horton LTIR UNTIL Marner signed, which presented a catch-22.
This trade puts them right at the cap where they can utilise all 10.5 million whether Marner signs before the season or holds out. Add in the fact that we only actually pay ~1M in salary explains the return.
Pridham needs a raise.</div></div>
Gotcha. Thanks.
And yes, it certainly is an advantage to have Pridham around. Didn't the dude help design the cap rules prior to joining the leafs?

Huh. This seems like a bit of a stroke of genius.
With Clarkson in place Marner loses a bit of leverage, no? I mean, before the trade Marner could kinda push the leafs to sign him at his number before camp or threatened to hold out, which would create an inflated cap hit ala Nylander.. which is something the leafs couldn't handle before this trade.
But now they can LTIR 10.5M to cover the impact if Marner holds out for a period of time. If I'm getting this right the leafs seem to be covering their butts in a way they can handle a hold out tactic.
Am I on track here?

Trade with Edmonton
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>If that's what it cost to get McDavid, he isn't worth getting. Matthews and a 1st is more than enough to get him.</div></div>
This is why ****ting on Leaf fans will never get old.
There is no GM, not even Peter Chiarelli, who would sign off on trading away McDavid for that.
You could argue Matthews and Draisaitl give or take some picks, but there is no deal worth trading away a young superstar already at the top of the world of hockey, arguably the BEST building block in the entire league for lesser parts. Yes the team and management are questionable, but that does not take away from what McDavid is as a player. Oiler fan or not, Leaf hater or not there are some things considered untouchable because their value goes beyond the quantifiable limits put forth by the league.
If the NHL had no hard cap, McDavid would be in the 20+ range on any team, and there wouldnt be any debate about it.

Trade with Edmonton
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>Why? Matthews is the best 5v5 goal scorer in the league, makes less money than McDavid and is younger. McDavid may be the best player in hockey but that doesn't mean his price is worth 3 times Matthews.</div></div>
He's played one full season in the nhl. Has yet to record 75 points. McDavid is worth way more than Matthews. Matthews and a first definitely doesn't get you McDavid. That's literally Matthews and a late first rounder for the best player in the NHL.

Actually no most of us do understand this. Its pretty basic. Point totals is not the best comparison when one player is buried on the 3rd line after sitting out 3 months and one player plays with a future hall of famer who has a history of inflating players numbers

Don't even bother arguing it. Most people are only saying Marner is worth Matthews money because they're Leaf haters and think that every player is worth 3 million more than they actually are. Try trading Marner for any half decent player and watch as everyone says "Marner isn't worth that much"

So which is it, either he is a 7-8 million player, or he alone would be able to pry McDavid away from Edmonton?</div></div>
On 3yr deal is he worth around 7. 3yr deal is suggested in this thread.
On that I was joking suggesting stupid return for McDavid if he asked for trade. Next time recognize sarcasm. On 3yr deal, Marner is worth 6.75-7.25 mil. On 6yr deal 9-9.5..

Marner gets Aho term and money
He is actually much less valuable than Aho, but Marner benefits from bigger market and bigger name. He should be making 9-9.5 on 5-6yr deal MAX. He is 5th most valuable player on Leafs and 3rd best forward. Both Matthews and Tavares are better forwards and more valuable and Rielly and Andersen are more valuable to Leafs than Marner. If he does not want to sign below 10, Ill wait for maybe offersheet and if he signs the paper, goodbye for 4 1sts.

Hard to believe a team could be worse with the addition of Doughty, but you did it. Phaneuf and MacDonald on defence. Petan who hardly saw the ice with the Marlies Cup run is now a third line LWer.
