Keeping Marner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jeff_Fingers_Agnet04</b></div><div>If dregs is correct with his statements then they need to somehow convince marleau to leave, that is one of the only ways the leafs can manage this cap situation. *Mysterious summer injury and ends up of Robidas Island*</div></div>
Or he starts exploring trade options now. If Dreger is correct in that Marner's camp is standing firm on AM money then I think the leafs are better off moving on from him sooner rather than later. Can't be handcuffed for the offseason... and should be ready to use the money they budgetted for Marner to go after a Duchene/Panarin type as a UFA.
The leafs can make Marner be reasonable, but they can trade him.. and I think they should if this is his position. The ego coming from Marner's camp seems a bit much..

Funny how so many folks think the Leaf defencemen are so bad. Leafs and Caps were just one goal apart in goals against , and Washington did that with all their high priced Dmen and goalie.
I'd rather keep Zaitsev, Kapanen the prospect and the picks over one year of DeMelo and the declining Nish.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>blowing_the_zone</b></div><div>I'm lining up with OldNy, Pal, and Goulet on this one.. it's a tough one.
I can see the benefit of moving one of Nylander or Kadri, and I can see how it'd be hard to give up on either. Nylander for all the reasons that have been debated forever on this site, and Kadri because he is the kind of player that I think Toronto needs more of, not less.
That said, Nylander really needs a bounce back year, but if the IIHF tourney is any indication it looks like he will, and in time his contract will look like a good one. Kadri struggled this year, in part, because of his diminished role and some crappy puck luck (it seemed like he was hitting the post almost every game..)imo... Also, he needs to be able to keep a lid on things - his suspension really cost us this year, and its an extra tough pill to swallow given where the Bruins are right now.
What I'd really like to see up front is something like this..
Kadri-JT-Hyman
Moore/the new Russian Kid-AM-Marner
Johnsson-Nylander-Kap
But.. like OldNy states, then our RS D becomes really green and kinda scary...
and that kinda seems to be the pickle that were in. Upgrade the D like you've done here, and take a gamble on the forwards being rearranged. Or try and keep the forwards in tact, and in doing so, we're taking a huge gamble on the d... and hoping like hell that the prospects pan out and Dermott can carry a heavier load..
Something has to give.</div></div>
Why not:
Kadri-Tavares-marner
Johnsson-Matthews-Bracco
Moore-Nylander-kapanen
Well... other than the fact we can’t afford that lineup lol.
I would have loved to see that first line in the playoffs. Give marner 2 snipers that can both dig pucks and all 3 play avwicked defensive game.

That's fine. But if Lindell is worth $5.8 x 6, i'm sure Leafs could find someone to take Zaitsev for next to nothing. Particularly after we pay the July 1st $3 million dollar bonus.

Mitch Marner Update
Leafs have put themselves in this position by overpaying Nylander and Matthews. Nylander by about 700,000 and Matthews 1.2m. Marner thinks he should be on that gravy train too, But realistically when compared to NHL wingers, and if you want to say guys coming off his ELC, even 8m might be high.
The bar for for 4 first rounders via offer sheets will be about 10.5m AAV....that's a 5 year deal. That's the only leverage Marner has. IMO the Leafs should have held firm with Nylander and even not sign him to such a high contract last November 30. It's going to get ugly soon in LeafLand and all about money.
It's like when you started grade nine and your parents gave you a raise in your allowance to 5 dollars a week from your 2 dollars. You were really happy. Wow a buck a day. Then you found out your friends were making a buck a day....for 7 days a week as they were getting 7 dollars a week. Man, did you feel your parents were short changing you.

Personally I think you let marner walk and take the four first rounders, sign A top pairing RHD and call it a day. If that is in fact what Marner’s ask is. I don’t see it as a viable option to overpay marner by nearly 3m just to keep him. If he feels the grass is greener he can go play somewhere else for the big money.
I believe the leafs are better off with players who want to win.

Mitch Marner Update
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>With Marner, the argument is there that he’s just as valuable as a C. He doesn’t play a traditional RW. He’s all over the ice, great at deflecting or breaking up passes, and elite skater and playmaker, and a PP QB.
I don’t think he’ll get Matthews level money, but it’s not hard for Ferris to justify that as their ask.</div></div>
For the money they are asking for I expect nothing less than multiple Cups. To be demanding the highest salaries for their positions in the league they need to be playing EVERY game as the best players in the league. It is pathetic how much these players feel they are worth when they can't win a playoff round or beat the NYI. They wilt under pressure and can't solve any defensive coverage assigned against them. Why is no one asking them these questions?
But yeah...they are worth $11.6 +, $6.96+ and what?? $11 MIL??? Ridiculous!! Trying to compete with Tampa roster who stars make $9.5, $8.5 and $7.875 MIL. Boston's star forwards make $6.875, $6.666 and $6.125. We will NOT have the depth on the lower lines and defence.
Dubas is tying up so much money in just 4 players who haven't won anything that the Leafs will never be able to compete against properly built teams are going to suck again soon. I guess we can get all happy and pretend beating a horribly run Oilers team is the same feeling as winning the Stanley Cup.
Tavares, Matthews, Nylander and Marner demands are costing us Johnsson, Kapanen, Brown, Gardiner and soon Kadri. After being a fan hoping for a good team for 45 years I can see it is still not going to work out when it was set up perfectly with the bad contracts being traded, Kadri, Rielly and others signed to decent contracts.

You mean one trash defender with some pp upside for one without, and a prospect struggling to make a mark in the AHL for a complementary piece and a very good 2nd line center league wide? I have no rooting interest in the Leafs, I'd actually love for them to get worse, and this trade does exactly that.

A few things I've read here thats gotta be pointed out.
1) Zaitsev should be kept away from Rielly at all costs until he remembers how to play hockey again. Why destroy 2 people when you just gotta dog house one of them. The Dermott-Zaitsev duo was actually not bad, and less ice time for Zaitsev is better for him as hes mainly used on the PK for special
2) Break up Zaitsev and Gardiner forever. Seriously. Thats ****ing attrocious. Unless Babs is being an ass and is trying to lessen Gardiners value so he resigns, then thats a different story. But this combo is hot garbage.
3) Lines should be Gardiner-Muzzin/Hainsey ------- Rielly-Muzzin/Hainsey ------- Dermott- Zaitsev.
4) Forwards im not gonna get into too much. They have way too much skill to be playing like a beer league. Just a slump really. Except for Nylander. He's really gotta get his **** sorted out
5) Hot take- Babcock isn't the guy that can take this team to the next level. I don't know why. Age caught up to him? Ego and money gone to his head? Behind the scenes stuff to lessen Marner&Matthews? I don't know. Hes way too smart to be coaching a team like this and have an absolute bird brain on the bench.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jamiepo</b></div><div>Did you see gardiner last night get lost in our end lose sight of the puck and just skate right away from it... it was almost comical....
So what is the answer?
My three solutions.
1. Reilly/Zaitsev
Gardiner/muzzin
Muzzin and gardiner actually looked to have some chemistry when they were together.
2. Trade Gardiner, try to get some futures back... din’t see that happening...
3. Sit gardiner or put him on the bottom pair.
I think our pairs would be much stronger as:
Reilly/zaitsev
Muzzin/ozhiganov
Dermott/hainsey or gardiner/Dermott
Any other ideas, again I don’t see our defence being as much of a problem as our forwards...
Hyman-Tavares-marner
Kappanen-Matthews-nylander
Johnsson-Kadri-marleau
Lindholm-gauthier-brown
These lines would kil...</div></div>
My solution is to put Rielly with Dermott which worked and Rielly looked off on right side last night, put Muzzin with Zaitsev and Gardiner with Ron or Igor on 3rd pairing. Prefer Ozhiganov. Gardiner looks lost out there.. Zaitsev with Gardiner just doesnt work.. one thing it helped is that Zaitsev has became solid defensively.. but he aint robot to cover all Gardiners pathetic bs.

Dermott was looking like best himself with Zaitsev and same goes for Zaitsev.. Gardiner needs caretaker in own zone.. Hainsey or Ozhiganov are that..

McDavid for Matthews Marner for Kucherov
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawk</b></div><div>First of all, your #1 error is you're basing PURELY on points....and unlike most fans, GM's and coaches don't purely look at points they also look at team value, market availability, injuries, etc.
But let's go ahead and go with what you're saying even though I believe Matthews is 90% the player McDavid is. $12.5M x 79% = $9.875M......Simple math, you can't even get that right jamie LOL!!! $9.875M x 4.5% (cap increase) = $10.319M That's the number. If you think Matthews is 79% of McDavid, $10,319,375 is the exact contract price for 8 years Matthews should get according to your value of Matthews.
I think Matthews is 90% of the value to the team of McDavid and again it goes beyond points. At 90% that number is $11.75M. We can disagree on what his value in comparison to McDavid is on a percentage scale but I promise you it's higher then 79% and may or may not be 90%, but the numbers at the end of the day don't lie when you use some common sense to support an argument...and in your case correct math LOL</div></div>
Just wondering where you get 90% from? We are talking about a player that has never put up 70 points in a season... if you want to talk about team value Mcdavid is the oilers. He puts the team on his back and drags them through the season, Matthews was injured this season and during that stretch the team did just fine. I’m just not seeing the 90%. If matthews played an entire season the way he came out of the gates this year you may have an argument. He is streaky.
I’m not advocating that Matthews gets 10.4m on Ann 8 year deal but if you want to go by the numbers that is his worth. But players are people. Matthews initial ask can not be higher than 13m, which is Mcdavid plus inflation. I’m sure dubas starts at 10m that’s how I come to 11.5m. Lot of conjecture out there on term so it’s hard to say. But if Matthews deal is over a base of 12mX 8 years then the leafs have over paid another player and it will hurt them in the immediate future. After a few years the cap hit will be fair.
Didn’t we just go through this whole nylander is worth draisaitl’s 8.5m do people learn nothing?
