Description
Let me just start by saying I dont think Nurse waives his NMC for LA but the trade with EDM benefits both teams.

I don't think any team would retain almost 2 mil for 6 years and only request a 2nd

Just for some perspective, that would be just under 10 million in actual cash the retaining team would be paying out.

Retention on any contract with that many years left is going to be a non-starter. Minus that, I think you're right about the Nurse trade being a benefit for both teams. Even if it won't happen.

The trade value of the RFA rights of Lizotte and Grundstrom is - and I'm being generous here - a 10% off coupon for Doordash

Am I reading this right. We're giving up Gavrikov, a 1st, and a 2nd for one of the worst contracts in the league, even with the 1.75M retention.

What on earth is this lol

Kakko doesn’t sign that contract

Kaliyev probably doesn’t play any more than Kakko, so Rangers just keep him

I wouldn't say so. Had he come in with just the GM title I'd certainly agree that a big change in direction wasn't going to happen. Giving him POHO as well though pretty much leaves the hockey side of things fully in his hands. Maybe I'm just being hopeful he's going to do the right thing for the team's future though and capitalize on what we hope Boone's value is to a cup contender.

Nurse may waive his NMC for LA, you're contenders in an attractive market.

I like the trade from EDM's POV, with those picks we would likely even be the ones to retain so no third party needed.
One of the only Nurse trades on this site that makes sense, gotta commend you for that!

The right thing for the team's future is keeping Boone as one of the best possible mentors for the kids. We don't need the picks or prospects folks would offer for him. The pool is built; it's time to develop what's there.

There are plenty of teams that have had success without key mentors in the dressing room. I also question whether Boone is the right guy for that role if it really is needed. He was downgraded to a 4th liner during the team's most successful season, the accountability and culture have fallen off under his captaincy, and he's very clearly a lead by example type so it's not like the young guys are going to learn anything new from another year of watching him play double the minutes they're getting.

As for the pool, who has actually stood out at the NHL level? Last I checked there's one 42 point season from Marchenko and one 40 point season from KJ. The majority of guys seem to be struggling compared to expectations for one reason or another. Until you actually start seeing results then you have to keep the prospects coming because otherwise you're banking way too much on a group that may not deliver enough high end talent to make a real contender. The Jackets should be 2-3 years or a lottery win away from exiting the bottom 5 at least. Trading away vets like Jenner for valuable young players goes a long way to both reinforcing the pool and opening up playing opportunities for players you need to see play and figure out if they're actually going to be the players you drafted them to be.

If you want to move guys out to make room for kids and get picks, focus on other guys. Jenner's on a sweetheart deal; he's the apotheosis of the sort of guy you want for those situations. And an easy way to confirm that is the sheer number of proposals from Sabres fans desperate to get someone exactly like him for their own rebuild.

As for your assessment of the prospect pool, you're confusing a pool that's been built and needs development with a pool that has already developed and now consists of NHLers. There are practical limits to how many kids you can keep adding and we are running up hard against them at multiple positions.

Exactly who else on the roster has any real value that can be traded today? Gaudreau has a full NMC, Severson has a full NTC, Werenski has a full NMC, Laine is in player assistance. Kuraly, Danforth, Provorov, Gudbranson, and Texier aren't worth anything near what Boone is and also have varying degrees of trade protection for some of them. The Jackets have one valuable player to trade to bolster their future right now that isn't a part of the future they're building and it's Boone because of his contract. It absolutely should be done.

The Jackets are absolutely nowhere near the limit to how many young players they could add. What they've struggled with is putting young players in the AHL where they should be developing instead of rushing them to the NHL. The organization needs to have a backbone and stop letting kids who aren't ready dictate where they're going to play out of fear of them wanting to leave. Look at Cleveland's roster right now. There are 5 guys that played in the last game that you could truly call NHL prospects. Add on that you don't have to bring every prospect immediately under contract and onto either the AHL or NHL roster and you can't possibly convince me that the Blue Jackets are running out of space within the org for young players.
