Last Year of Cap Hell - Aggressive

Description
This is my companion projection to Last Year of Cap Hell - Passive
I could see GMBG going this route. Two biggest problems was depth and weak secondary scoring. Trading draft capital for a younger talent with some cost control addresses both issues. Then resign Fleury and run it back.

The trade for Marchenko is more symbolic than actual I don't think a first round pick will be in play but I could see multiple seconds and potentially prospects like Firstov, Lambos, ect available.

This will make the Wild competitive for a 3rd place spot in the division and a 5-6 overall in the conference at the expense of having significant purchasing power in 2025-26 when the Parise and Suter buyouts fall off.

Side question: at what point do you think it’s fair to consider firing the GM instead?

He’s the one responsible for the terrible cap issues and he’s already fired and hired coaches and nothing has changed. I feel like a fresh view on things might be the way to go

Columbus has no interest in moving Marchenko at all, let alone for that.

Okay so let’s review the Suter/Parise buy outs.

Both were on a 7.5M and had (?) how many years left on their respective deal when bought out?

Guerin still has some leash with the owner. He signed a multi-year extension this past summer and will almost certainly get a couple of seasons without the dead cap to prove his "plan."

If I'm trying to forecast out any events that could really ramp up the pressure, I think two standout to me:

1) If he does trade Rossi. Big decision that would no doubt raise eyebrows in the fanbase, so the return would be critical in the court of public opinion.
2) Kaprizov. NMC for these last 2 years of his deal. If he doesn't get an extension and there's a looming threat of him walking as a UFA, things will be tense.

First off Marchenko is going to get 4mil but if its long term its gonna be at least 6mil. Also in what world would Columbus give up a U24 with RFA rights for someone they waited 4 years for...2 2nd round picks? Can you present a similar player at a similar deal with RFA rights? Really this deal is gonna cost you a 1st and a A tier prospect minimum plus your going to have to sign him a 4x4.

Would the Wild consider a deal around a Severson for Spurgeon? Maybe add Rossi and we add KJ with picks being swapped to even it out?

In terms of realism, no. That's a complicated deal for both sides for a number of different reasons, so I can't really see how anything like that would actually materialize.

On paper and for this website, it'd be a fun idea to explore and see if you can get the balance right.

Rossi also has rumors circling that he may be on the way out or otherwise seen as not a core part of the Wild's future (for whatever crazy reason). Marchenko not only has no such indicators, he's one of the guys we're committed to building around. Thus the discrepancy.

It's how "it works" in the sense that Marchenko would require a premium overpayment because there's no interest in moving him. Also in the fact that the Jackets have two thirds this year but the 2nd is potentially committed to the Flyers. wink

The Jackets requiring a premium for Marchenko doesn't impact Rossi's value

Let me try what you did

Oh there are rumors that Jiricek is unhappy in Columbus, how about a 2024 2nd and maybe Ryan O'Rourke for him?

Oh there are rumors that Saros may be traded out of Nashville, how about a 2025 2nd and a 2024 3rd for him?

At this point if I were you I would simply not respond unless it's to walk back what you've said. I wouldn't try doubling down, it would just make you look like a hypocrite.

Counterpoint: this came about because of a crap offer for a player we're not moving, so "turnabout is fair play" only applies the one time.

This thing wasn't started by a Jackets fan, hon. Scroll up, check out that Marchenko "trade", look at the OP, see what's listed under "favorite team", and then get back to me.

When did I say the OP was a good trade champ?

I'm talking about you lowballing Rossi's value because of "rumors", which you didn't seem to agree with when I did it with your players

If you wanted to prove your point, you could have said "would you trade Rossi for two 2nds?" and your work would have been done.

Scroll up and read again sweetie.

So... you're pushing back because I dared to go with assets the Jackets actually had. Okay then.

The idea is that Severson has 6 years on his deal at 6.25. Spurgeon has 3 at 7.5 or something like that. His productivity has been bad. While Severson more or less fits the Wild and their emerging window while they have Kaprizov and the others. Spurgeon would make sense for the Jackets as he could be a vet that can teach some of our up and coming blue liners. Rossi would fit as a top 6 C something that we need and has multiple yrs of team control. He fits perfectly in our window of contention. KJ is really good but we just have an abundance of wingers. I could see a deal kind of structured as:

Minnesota Wild

Damon Severson
Kent Johnson
2024 2nd round pick CBJ
2026 6th round pick CBJ

Columbus Blue Jackets

Jared Spurgeon
Marco Rossi
2024 3rd round pick Min

Plus, this could allow for the Jackets to explore the idea of buying out Gubranson

Who’s Cam Severson? Why would Columbus want to buy out Gudbranson? Why would Minnesota move their captain for that?

Cam's the guy we got back in exchange for Cale Hulse so we could make space on the roster for Ron Hainsey.

And while a Spurgeon trade is the sort of thing that would almost certainly make a KJ trade viable, I can't imagine Minnesota ever even giving that the time of day, let alone any consideration.

Why not? Severson is only 29 yrs old and Spurgeon is 34 and carries a mil more cap hit. Severson fits the Wilds win now mode and Spurgeon has huge regression issues.
