Sources say Matthews has requested a trade to Columbus
For real though, I fully expect the Jackets to be ready for Matthews should he reach UFA, along with most of the league. Toronto is under the gun to make some playoff headway this year or things are going to get very grim.

Boqvist is a player the Jackets would move to acquire a 1C. Jarmo would not do this trade. Plus, the Jackets have too many wingers. The Jackets would look to consolidate their wingers if anything.

How Miller to the CBJ could actually work for Columbus
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dk325</b></div><div>I don't think they can possibly sign Miller without money being being traded away over more than one season. It's the entire reason why both Roslovic and Boqvist are included in the proposal. If they only move out Nyquist in the deal then they're almost $4M over the cap in this super optimistic scenario for the year that this post covers. It would have to be either Rosi and Boqvist or Voracek and Voracek is likely crazy expensive to offload.</div></div>
Voracek, if bought out, would give the jackets a savings of almost 6 mil. Fitting Miller in at a reasonable extension should not be difficult but I do think another minor move would be necessary. Miller is a very good player and should be able to mirror the peak years of Gaudreau.

I could see the Jackets maybe make a play for Miller, if and only if, the Canucks are out of contention and the Jackets are almost a lock for the playoffs. The Jackets need to maximize the great years of Gaudreau but they also are not going to destroy the future.
As far as the trade goes, I just can’t see the Jackets moving Roslovic. Jarmo moved Atkinson and Bjorkstrand already. The fans are not going to be happy especially since this is a player who wants to be here. Jarmo has to tread carefully. Not sure this works unless Nyquist is traded. Because outside of that it would require salary retention on Miller thus upping the cost. So i see a deal only working at the deadline in one of two ways:
1) Miller (50% retention) for Cuelemans, Chinakhov, 2024 1st, and a 2025 2nd
2) Miller for Nyquist, Cuelemans, 2024 1st, and a 2025 2nd
Note: this takes into consideration that Miller is going to sign long term in Columbus.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>First of all, on what planet is Schwindt a "great prospect"? He's like a C+ prospect, B- at best, with likely a 3rd/4th line swing ceiling. More importantly, if one of those guys walks next summer with no Cup ring, it immediately turns into a very bad deal. If both walk without Calgary winning the Cup, it's an absolute horror show. And let's be honest: this team ain't winning the Cup. This is a huge gamble, and we won't know if Calgary made out on the deal until next July.</div></div>
That was my take on it. Calgary is trying too hard to keep the remnants together. Having Gaudreau walk and Tkachuk wanting out should have started a retool to get some younger players to grow into the core of a future cup team. Not trade Tkachuk for soon to be UFAs and possibly set this team back many years. Pressure is on Calgary to make this work but I think they are going to have to offer mad money to Huberdeau, though.

CBJ w Tkachuk and Laine
I don’t want Tkachuk at this price. There really is no way realistically to get Tkachuk and not have to trade Laine. The cap would be a major problem next season and the uncertainty of Tkachuk long term makes this a very bad move. If you read Jarmo’s moves correctly you should see what he is intending to do. Develop young defensemen in Ceulemans, Jiricek, and Mateychuk and set up this team with a young defensive core that will anchor this team for years.

Ok, who was right? This guy. Jarmo knows the price to pick up a 1C is very prohibitive. Gaudreau is the best FA to hit the market since Panarin. We know what Jarmo thought of Panarin. For all those worried about Laine, I imagine this might help him see Jarmo is trying to win here.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dk325</b></div><div>Go watch exit interviews. Everyone in the organization, including Werenski and Laine, sees what they are building. They all know it's a couple years away and are prepared to work through the growing pains to get there. The best way forward is to give it a year and see how the kids project. Then if there is no emergence of a potential top line addition from within then you go out and get a guy in free agency or with a trade next year.</div></div>
The biggest weapon we have is our cap space. It should be weaponized.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dk325</b></div><div>Are the Leafs figuring it out though? Seems like they had to give up a whole lot of players since those deals were signed that could have provided them with championship or at least 2nd round level depth.
I just like the Jackets cap future way more without Gaudreau at $10 mil. I'd also say there's zero certainty that Sillinger, Johnson and Marchenko will be under $6 mil/year. The team needs one more year to be able to project these things out more clearly before they go big game hunting on players like Gaudreau.</div></div>
But can you wait one more year? The problem here is the need to sign Laine. If Jarmo is not aggressive in FA then it could cause Laine not to sign and then trade him. I imagine Werenski wouldn’t be happy either and would demand a trade. Then this team will have serious issues to deal with not only internally but from a player perspective. Getting Gaudreau and dealing with those issues in the future maybe better than have to deal away two core pieces now because Jarmo failed to make this team better. As for the cap, it is going to rise. We know this and it will also likely rise by a lot in two years. Why worry about it now considering most of these young guys haven’t even proved their worth yet.

Let’s see, the roster for the Jackets as we speak looks like this:
Laine-Roslo-Voracek
Texier-Silly-Bjorkstrand
Gus-Jenner-Bemstrom/Foudy
Robinson-Kuraly-Danforth
Now, consider the Jackets have guys like Chinakhov, Johnson, and Marchenko trying to play themselves onto the roster. The Jackets have no need for a player like Kerfoot who at best is a second liner but more of a 3rd liner. The Jackets have tons of players that can play there. Kerfoot is not going to the Jackets.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Viqsi</b></div><div>His job is to put together the best roster on the ice long-term as well as short-term. Gaudreau would be a major short-term improvement, but that contract would be a severe impediment to keeping any of the benefits of our long-term investments. We would be losing all those developing kids right when Gaudreau is starting to fade and we therefore need them the most. It is therefore, more than likely, Not A Good Idea.</div></div>
I don’t see it that way at all. In fact, it is expected that in the summer of 2024 the cap will skyrocket up. Cap space would not be an issue with this signing. And Gaudreau is not fading. He just had a career year. That is a bad take.

This has literally nothing to do with anything I said. We've already GOT "solid" center depth and at least one elite wing, and others are in development.</div></div>
Johnson has to prove it first. I believe he will but Jarmo’s job is to put the best team he can on the ice.

Gaudreau would be nice to have but I wouldn't want to spend that much money on him; I'd rather be able to keep the kids we're developing when they develop.</div></div>
The problem with Voracek is older and would be better suited to play second line minutes. I also think it is very possible that Texier could still be viewed as a center and if surrounded by high offensive talent he might be able to push through. The team is going to need solid center depth but elite wings. I think Jarmo could be a dark horse for him.

Jackets Trade Down From 6
The more I think about this draft the more I see that there is no way the Jackets trade down from 6. We know in some order that Wright Cooley, and Slafkovsky are going in the first 3 picks. The Jackets could easily use either of the two RHD or Gauthier. Trading down will not be in the cards here considering this.

In this situation Buffalo keeps the 9th OA. However, the Jackets would essentially be trading down from 6 to 15. Not happening. There would need to be a substantial return coming back the Jackets way and this is not it.

Some thoughts,
Lekkerimaki is a bit too high for my taste. If Ottawa was looking for goal scoring I would think Kemell makes more sense.
I agree with the Philly pick. I think they want Gauthier. Most think Jiricek but Gauthier fits a need.
The Jackets pick at 12 won’t be Lambert if either Geekie or Nazar are available. Lambert is such a polarizing player and the Jackets cannot afford to screw up either of these picks.
