Reilly is not the answer. If a deal can’t be made with hronek then there are 10 or 11 different defenceman I’d target before reilly

How does it make sense that Toronto trades the better player that’s actually signed to a bargain of a contract with a long term commitment AND they give up a 1st round pick?

I swear some people on here don’t think before posting stuff.

Rielly will be a career Leaf. If he's going to get traded it will be in the last year of his contract and if the Leafs don't win a cup by then.

The goal I would assume is grab shorter term overpriced players to reach the cap and provide some vet leadership (And obviously some more draft capitol) but try not to deals over 3 years so we have cap flexibility when this team starts competing again.

Hronek > Rielly

Hronek is better defensively, 4 years younger, a RHD, and similar offensively. Rielly’s contract also has a pretty good chance to age poorly, considering he’s already 30. In a couple seasons he’ll likely have fallen off a bit offensively while continuing to be one of the worst defensive dmen in the league

Not a chance.

Rielly has shown absolutely no signs of falling off and with the cap only increasing that contract looks better and better every season.

Hronek is definitely not better. He’s carried by Hughes. When Hronek was in Detroit, he was atrocious defensively - now that he plays with a guy that has the puck more then anyone in hockey his defensive stats look better because he doesn’t have to defend as much. That doesn’t mean that he’s all of a sudden good defensively.

Rielly makes players he plays with better. Look at all the partners he’s played with.. Hainsey, Brodie, Lyubushkin, Schenn… none of those guys were top 4 guys but Rielly made them a fit because he elevates his play to make his teammates better. Hell he got Luke Schenn a near $3M contract when the entire league didn’t wanna give him much more than league minimum. That’s something you don’t see in stats.

Rielly >> Hronek.

Yeah not a chance. Hughes is a top 2-3 dman in the league. Rielly and Hronek I’d say off the top of my head without thinking of too many names are both probably fringe top 30

That's so incredibly wrong...

Hughes is number 3 IMO

Rielly's in the 10-15 range (7-12)

Hronek's in the 40s (25+)

Hronek’s actually been worse defensively this season, but throughout his career he’s been better than Rielly who’s always been atrocious in his own zone

RHD are more valuable than LHD

Hronek is 4 years younger and will likely sign for a similar amount to why Rielly is making right now, give or take 500k either side (7-8M range)

Hronek has more total points and only 6 less primary points than Rielly at 5v5. If he was the PP QB like Rielly is he’d have even more points than he currently has

Given that Hronek is younger, plays the more valuable side, is better defensively, and is similar offensively, he’s worth more than Rielly

Just because a right handed shot is perceived as more valuable doesn’t mean he’s better than Rielly.

As for your points argument, again Hronek plays with the best defenceman in the league this season and Hughes is doing most of the work. Rielly has played with the likes of non-offensive defenceman like Brodie, Lyubushkin, etc.
& Rielly hasn’t played as much on the top PP unit this year because Keefe and Treliving have wanted a right handed shot defender on that unit which is why Klingberg started there and Liljegren has been getting time on it lately.

So no. Hronek is not better than Rielly.

Rielly is absolutely not in the 7-12 range

Makar, Q Hughes, Fox, Heiskanen, McAvoy, Josi, Dahlin, Hedman, Toews, Slavin, Karlsson, Theodore, Bouchard, Morrissey, Dobson, Hamilton, Spurgeon, Weegar, Pietrangelo, and Lindholm are guys I’m taking over him for sure. That’s already 20

After that you can argue for guys like Hronek, Sergachev, Doughty, Faber, Andersson, Ekblad, Ekholm, Brodin, Dunn, Sanderson, Chychrun, Forsling, Skjei, Pelech, Letang, Pulock, Harley, Jones, and Hanifin as well. Potentially some others I’m missing.

He and Hronek are both in the 20-40 range

Yes Hughes has made Hronek better, but Hronek has also made Hughes better. He’s helped him elevate his game to a top 2-3 dman in the whole league

The only argument for Rielly being more valuable is that he has more points this season and is slightly better offensively in general. Everything else in in Hronek’s favour

Tell me who of those first 20 you’re taking over Rielly? Maybe you could argue Spurgeon or Hamilton because they’ve been injured most of the year, but they are also elite when they play
