Tidy work by fitzgerald to clear cap space

I like this for NJ, clear cap space next year and get an arguably better goalie

I think most had him valued at a 3rd - maybe a 2.

Not sure what happened to GMMG in the waning minutes of the deadline.

The cap space given to New Jersey + the extra year on Vanecek's contract is what's most relevant in this trade.

Devils get my vote.

Why did they get two weak goalies? Sure, they didn't pay a lot for either, but why?

Honestly a little sad to see Vitek go. He was much better last season than now, he has a lot more talent in him than what’s shown this season so far. Wish him the best of luck.

With that said, this trade reads like a massive W for Fitzy and the Devils. Moving out Vitek for Käkhönen is a straight upgrade in net while also gaining a cleaner cap sheet next year for free.
Doesn’t quite make up for the poor return in the Toffoli deal however.

Bad move by Grier imo. I guess nobody else was interested in Kaapo, but they should have received far more than a 7th for swapping Goalies, especially for one with a Higher Cap Hit and additional year of term. Grier should have requested a couple 4th Round Picks over just a measly 7th

I bet Kaapo doesn’t fair any better statistically in NJD either, so it’s not an upgrade, it’s more of a move to dump Vitek

I vote for the Sharks because this trade would have made sense for the Devils only if they hadn't traded for Jake Allen. And the Devils traded away Toffoli so the cap space they got is artificial. They have to find another elite winger for next season, plus they have Hamilton and his $9M popping...

That's what I am wondering.

well, Sharks team owner Hasso Plattner does look a bit like Ralph Bellamy from Trading Places (though a bit more like how he looked in his homeless form in Coming to America)

Grier has beaten out Milbury as the worst GM imo.

It's a shame. I'm rooting for Mike (even if I'm not rooting for the Sharks). And even with the ridiculous stack of conditions he agreed to, the Meier deal looks better now than it did at the time. But today... today we buh-rutal.

I've watched a franchise trade away good players and fan favorites only to lose fans and attendance. They never recovered. They're now, comically enough, leaving Oakland to maybe go to Vegas.
Along with another bay area team that already left.

At this point, it might happen again.

Everyone has overrated the Sharks prospect pool by the way. Including the pieces from the Meier trade. That trade was terrible.

I don't think getting Musty and Shak + what may be a high-ish 24 2nd comes anywhere near terrible, but I understand. That said, if the Sharks are not high on Shak, the Blues will happily take him off their hands.

Good move for New Jersey. Vanacek hasn’t worked out for them, and this gets them out of the rest of his contract, clears a place to bring in a new goalie to pair with Allen next season, and lets them test drive Kahkonen to see if he’s somebody they might want to try to sign.

I guess the appeal for San Jose is that Vanacek is signed for one more year while Kahkonen isn’t, and Vanacek’s salary next season is the same as what they paid Kahkonen this season. His cap hit’s higher, but if they’re in danger of falling below the salary floor, cap hit > actual salary is a good thing.

They chose him over Holtz, so they must see something.
I watched him play and I didn't notice anything special yet.

Tom Fitzgerald owes Mike Greer a big favor at the Draft. Otherwise, this trade makes no sense for the Sharks.

Well, he's a 6-4 Dman who can skate really well, has some skill and he's an AHL all-star at 21. Like I said, have Mikey call us up.

Sjs already tanking their 2024-25 season before it starts with the extra year of term on Vanecek. I see your 4d chess, Grier.
