Honestly, get Tanner Pearson out of here. I can't see anyone really being excited about acquiring a guy scoring at a 20-25 point pace who isn't necessarily a shutdown defensive forward.

If you skip Pearson, you can burn that last retention slot on Tanev in this deal and get a better return, potentially; that being said, I don't think any of these deals are good for Montreal. It basically boils down to trading Barron and Winnipeg's 1st this year for Liljegren and Robertson. Would you do that trade straight-up?

Barron is 0.33 p/60 vs Liljegren's 0.31.
He also has 11 goals already compared to Liljegren's 13, in half the games.
He's younger, which leaves him more room for development.

The only thing Liljegren really has on Barron is experience.

Too many factors to take into account for a direct comparison.
Barron is 3.8 oiGA vs Liljegren's 4.0 (career) and Liljegren has had more favorable deployment. That's just at a glance though.
Liljegren has done more penalty killing, which is just one area of discrepancy.

There's no distinct difference to suggest Liljegren has more value unless it's a case where experience is a factor. Neither player's value is in their defensive contributions at this stage.

Barron is a OFD on a team with Hutson, Matheson and Mailloux. Liljegren is a TWD with great defensive metrics on the 2nd pair. Player value isnt linear, you are disregarding all context

No matter how I look at it, Barron for Liljegren is at best a lateral move.
Meanwhile we're also giving up a 1st for another dimunuitive winger that we don't need.

Let Toronto deal directly with Calgary here and leave us out.

Matheson will not be here forever and Barron is a replacement in training.
Hutson and Mailloux are still question marks, and differ stylistically.
The ideal scenario would be to have all 3 work out and give us a dynamic blueline for years to come.

Let them develop and be patient. If we need to make a lateral move for more experience, we can do that when the timing is better.

Even leaf fans would disagree with you on that. Liljegren has large gaps in his defensive game. This isn't to say Barron is all sunshine and rainbows, he was work to do in his own zone for sure, but he's only 22, Habs can be patient with him.

I would steer clear from Liljegren, he's turning 25 in a few months, has had more than enough opportunity to be a top 4 guy on a thin RD leafs defensive squad, and when everyone is healthy he's been scratched a handful of times or plays on their 3rd pair...

I would have interest in Robertson however. Not for a 1st or Barron, but I'm sure something could be packaged for him.

No leaf fan would agree on that. Hes their best defensive dman. They dont want to get rid of him because of that reason. But if it means they get Tanev, one of the best DFD in the league, then theyd do it. You have no clue what you are talking about if you truly believe Barron can come anywhere close to Liljegren defensively. Barron is in the AHL because his defence stunk so bad. Liljegren plays top 4 minutes and the PK

Hes in the 80th percentile 5v5 defence. Barron is in like the 15th percentile.

I’m not comparing Barron to Liljegren… they are both in completely different stages of their career. Habs can be patient with Barron, whereas Liljegren should have established himself by now and hasn’t. You can’t say he’s great defensively when he’s been a healthy scratch or on their 3rd pairing on an already thin blue line, Simon Benoit has surpassed him for crying out loud….

And yes, most leaf fans would disagree with you. Go watch the majority of Steve Dangles podcast videos. Dude’s been complaining about Liljegren’s defensive problems for years…
