They can and probably will still take cap dumps for picks. Mrazek, Johnson, Beauvillier, and Zaitsev contracts are coming off the books at the end of the season (among a few others), but these are the four big ones which is about 17.45 mil between the four contracts. Still a lot of cap to work with
Not to mention the $8M in dead cap in recapture penalties and buyouts coming off the books. So that's $25.5M essentially of salary that needs to be filled from just those guys.
They've used up $8.75M now with Foligno and Dickinson. Vlasic and Reichel need new contracts (maybe will cost a total of $6M/yearly). So that's $9Mish left to meet the floor. Taylor Raddysh's contract will be intriguing to me. Is he a 20 goal scorer or was that a fluke because he was playing with Toews/Kane and PP1? I vote the latter.
Why get paid to take bad contracts when you could simply sign your own?
- Kyle Davidson, probably
Davidson just recently told The Athletic that you also can only have so many picks/prospects. I get it you can also always flip your prospects for more and more futures but at some point you need to stop turning over 40% of your roster year in and year out. And truthfully, in 2 years, the Hawks could possibly have an entire team of almost nothing but ELCs and be respectable (not playoffs good, but can stay afloat day in and day out). You still have to reach the cap floor. You still need veterans. You gotta keep something cohesive and these are good locker room guys. Both are wearing A's. There's so much more than just years and AAV and 2nd round draft picks.
And to be quite honest, guys like Dickinson may want to play for a depth-less team like the Hawks because it gives them those Top 6 minutes and PP/PK time they wouldn't get with another team. So there's a trade off of keeping your career going and maybe even flourishing on a depthless/rebuilding team than being a tweener for Colorado but hoping to go deep in the playoffs while you watch from the suite.
and to think the Nucks had to throw in picks to get rid of his contract before. and now a huge overpayment. nice cushion for not making the playoffs for the next few years. shows you what the icetime and opportunity will do to your stats.
We’re just trying to stay above the cap floor for right now
I mean, theres building for the future you want VS building for the future you expect. So either way they expect to be trash tier for 2 more years. Thats a hard sell as a fan.
Reaching the cap floor can happen at any time, theres always a way to bring in more money. This contract didnt need to be signed now or even be multi-year. You dont think dickinson would be ecstatic to be offered a 1-year 4.25 offer twice?
The foligno deal makes more sense as he has value to any cup contender and might have wanted to leave at a discount to try and win.
For future posters… please stop complaining it’s too much money. It’s a trash fire team that will need to reach cap floor and he’s signed for 2 years only. Relax. It fits everyone’s needs which makes it a win-win contract.
That's fine if you didn't have the same toxic two or three Hawks fans in every ACGM calling other teams players cap dumps while saying the Hawks would need multiple 1sts to take on said cap dumps. Other fan bases have a right to be annoyed at the hypocrisy, it goes back to the proverb, wrestling with a pig: you both get dirty and the pig enjoys it so those ppl are easy blocks but dont act like those fans dont exist in your fan base.

Every team has toxic fans on this site. Some people are also just trolls.
