Description
I like the flexibility of these forward adds. You could flip Monahan and Pettersson, or you could leave the Lotto line intact and have Suter play the left side with Lindholm and Mikheyev, dropping Monahan to the 4th line, where he could either centre Hoglander and Lafferty, or play wing with Lafferty at centre.
Transactions
1.
VAN
  1. Monahan, Sean (992 500 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
Probably an overpayment for Monahan, but it looks like he's generating a lot of interest. You might even have to add a pick for the retention.
2.
VAN
  1. Lindholm, Elias
Détails additionnels:
This is a painful one, and would depend on how confident the Canucks are on extending Lindholm. Not because I'm that high on Lekkerimaki (still would have preferred that they took Ryan Chesley with that pick), but because they don't have a whole lot of scoring on the wing coming up in the system.

Flames can always flip Kuzmenko.
CGY
  1. Kuzmenko, Andrei
  2. Lekkerimäki, Jonathan
  3. Choix de 1e ronde en 2025 (VAN)
Détails additionnels:
Pick is lottery protected
3.
VAN
  1. Bogosian, Zach
Détails additionnels:
Would prefer to keep Friedman and throw in another prospect ala Bloom, but they'd likely lose Friedman to waivers anyways.
MIN
  1. Friedman, Mark
  2. Truscott, Jacob [Liste de réserve]

monahan is worth more than a 22 y/o fringe NHLer, not saying you're miles off but at least a 4th has to be added, I think a 3rd would be the most realistic

That is too much to give up for Lindholm. Lekkerimaki and Willander are only potentially available if it's for a young cost controlled difference maker.

Thats a fairly major underpayment for monahan.

Podkolzin is in his D+5 season and still is in the ahl. Hes worth a late 2nd at best.

I will never understand why Monahan is so underappreciated on this site, The guy is literally top 50 amongst all centermen in the league in scoring and is an amazing locker room presence with high skill and compete but cause of a terrible injury history (even though that seems to be behind him or could be mitigated by putting conditions on a pick), he is seen as having no value. Playoff teams would love to add a guy who is on pace to put up 45-50 points on a cheap deal while being deployed mostly with Anderson and Gallagher.

Given the Wild gave up a 7th to get Bogosian, I'd probably say keep the players and the Wild would probably want a 5th to get something better back than they gave up. Seems reasonable for a deadline depth defenseman pickup.

Agreed. Calgary dumping him was stupid considering he was an LTIR Candidate anyways. One of BT's worst trades.

I'd say Calgary accepts (assuming they have another team to move Kuzmenko to)

People have unrealistic expectations where they only want the younger, cheaper, and best players.
There's a lack of understanding of who is available at any given time because part of armchair GMing means assuming everyone is available for the right price. That works for hypothetical discussion, but not always when debating actual possibilities.
There's an irrational refusal to acknowledge the reality that Monahan is one of the best available centers at this point in time.

Lindholm is the only one that compares. Similar age, similarly strong in faceoffs, similar p/g.
Monahan is the much cheaper option both in cap and expected trade value.
Lindholm is only an option for a few teams. Monahan is an option for every team.

There are legitimate injury concerns that can be mitigated with conditions, but they are overblown in the case of a pure rental.
He's currently healthy and his "repairs" are only a concern if you plan to offer him a lengthy extension.

It was but it wasn't, the Flames were hoping to still be in win-now mode and couldn't wait to see if Monahan was going to be healthy and couldn't risk him not being healthy and wasting cap space and actual money. It really did make some sense for the Flames to pay to move him but it worked out better for the Habs than the Flames, which is kind of ironic cause the two teams on paper are polar opposites, Calgary is a much better team than the Habs are on paper

He’s deployed mostly on the PP. At 5v5 he does nothing. And do you think he plays on the Canucks power play?

I think it made sense to ownership, who always wants to "be competitive". To any rational observer, losing two 100pt players in a single off season isn't a quick fix. They would have been better off utilizing the cap space from Gaudreau departure and moving Huberdeau prior to his extension for futures. I get that hindsight is 2020, but the results speak for themselves. There are very few players in the league that anyone should sign to double digit 8 year contracts past 28 years old. Statistically the league regresses to the same bell curve: production peaks at 28 and declines.
