My biggest memory of Myers from this year was how hated he was by Canucks fans after the 1st Jersey game.
I’d value him as a decent 3rd pairing guy at 2 mill. So a 2nd to dump imo. If you’re fine keeping him tho absolutely fair. Just wondering what the plan is because you can’t bring soucy off IR without clearing cap. I’d assume you’d much rather have Soucy than Myers in the lineup no? Edit mistook poolman for soucy and thought soucy was still on LTIR. Ignore the last part
Myers is always a really up and down player with the fans, but management seems to be happy with him. He still has his defensive brain cramps once in a while and gives up a great scoring opportunity, but he's got Demko to bail him out. He's an offensive defenceman, and part of the problem in the past is that the Canucks have tried to pair him with another offensive guy like OEL. That simply doesn't work, as he needs a stay at home shutdown partner who can cover for his defensive lapses and allow him to jump up and contribute offensively without risking the counter attack (like last night against the Isles where he ripped one blocker side by Sorokin on a two-on-one break. No flashy play or anything to set it up, just a wicked shot that flat out beat Sorokin). A big part of his success this year in my opinion has been giving him those kind of partners, whether it be Soucy, Cole, or Zadorov.
All in all Myers is a hard asset to value. He's a 3rd pairing offensive guy, and probably worth only $2-$3M based on his on ice production, but he's a big, physical RHD, which drives the price up (Gudbranson 4 x $4M, Mayfield 7 x $3.5M). Based on the market value for guys like those, I'd say he's worth closer to $3.5-$4M, not for his on ice production, but the fact that players like him simply are worth more and get overpaid due to the combination of their size and playing a premium position.
All in all, it simply isn't worth it to pay to dump him, especially at this price. You're essentially paying a 2nd to dump a 3rd pair guy, then probably paying a 1st minimum to add another RHD to replace Myers. In all likelihood, the guy you're bringing in to replace him simply won't be worth the 1st + 2nd + potentially more that you're essentially paying for the upgrade, especially when you factor in that Myers has played well and been a great fit for Tocchet's system while you have no clue if the guy you're bringing in will fit or not. Just isn't worth the risk in my opinion. As the saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
