None of the players being traded for a first round pick is worth a first round. Every team would decline.

I'm going to add to this... Matheson might be worth a 1st but not the extra pick and LA doesn't need him. If they needed another dman they'd just called up Clarke who's tearing up the AHL.

Matheson is tied for 12 in defenseman scoring. If you feel he is not worth a first, then I hope you also feel none of Dunn, Werenski, Sanheim, Gostisbehere, Heiskanen, Reilly, Karlsson are worth a 1st..

He is top 12 in scoring by defensemen. He plays more than 25 minutes a night on average. What exactly do you think a top offensive defenseman does that Matheson apparently does not do?

Matheson today, at his scoring pace, his time on ice, and at his salary, is definitely worth a 1st.

He’s 21st in points per game. He plays on a terrible Montreal team that has no offensive defenceman besides him so he’s the guy that get the offensive time which translates to points because someone has to get them. You put him on a contending team and he’s be lucky to get 2nd PP time and his offence would drop dramatically.

He’s not worth a 1st. No team is giving that up for him.

So let me get this straight:

Even though he's doing exceptionally well with the ice time he is receiving (21st is still #1 on most teams), your argument is that he should not be receiving that ice time and so he is bad.

Are you saying that we could more or less play any defenseman 25 minutes per game and they would have his stats?

I’m saying you’re overvaluing him just because he has the 12th most points. That doesn’t mean much. He’s not worth a 1st. At most he’s a mid 2nd round pick and a prospect - his game is all about offence. He wouldn’t really be a top 4 guy or play 25 minutes on a contending team. He gets that ice time because Montreal has young players that they don’t wanna over play, but contending teams don’t have that issue.
You’d get laughed at for asking for a 1st for him.
