Can’t say anything bad about the player and Jets keep a leader but I must say the final years on this deal I can’t see aging well. Hope they do though.

“Jets keep a leader” considering the stories that have come out about Winnipeg and its toxic locker room over the years, I wouldn’t really call anyone a leader in there

Clearly, the Jets still see themselves as legit contenders. They do have some holes in their lineup, but they have enough high end talent to do some damage if the puck bounces their way. I think this is a A- contract for the Jets.

But I thought he was Boston bound to fill in the shoes of Bergeron.

In an open division, keeping your 1C and top Goalie is a huge win. Now get playoffs results!

Locking yourself in with a core that can't win is a great idea

Yeah because that totally worked with the Leafs.

The Leafs locked in their core at an average age of 23.8 years old.

21 - Matthews
22 - Marner
23 - Nylander
26 - Rielley
27 - Tavares
28 - Makar
28 - McDavid

I would not pay this much for someone's 31-38 years. Fine for the next couple years but will be impossible to trade away once the Jets flounder

AAV is fine, but too much term at this point in his career.

Weird contract and I think that's slightly rich and too long.

This seems to be another case of a team signing a star player near the end of his prime to a long-term contract, knowing that it’s probably going to turn bad toward the latter half, but willing to take that risk to keep the AAV down in the short term. Is that a good strategy? Time will tell. So far I don’t think he’s showing any signs of declining, but neither was Blake Wheeler when they extended him to age 38, and they ended up buying him out. Maybe they’re ok with that. I'm rating this signing below Hellebuyck because goalies like him are harder to replace than forwards like Scheifele, and I think goalies are more likely than forwards to maintain their level of play into their late 30s (though I haven't tried compiling any stats to confirm that).

I voted yes because retaining two star players a big deal for Winnipeg.
The AAV on both deals are fine. Obviously the term is bad. Good deal for the next 2-3 years.
Could get raw in years 4-7

I like both deals, they only have a signing Bonus in year one. Both will be worth the dollars for the next six years. The Salary is slightly frontloaded but the final two years are 7M and 6M salary wise. If they regress big time by then a buyout won't be horrible. But the cap will be north of 100M by then so shouldn't matter to much, nothing like the suter parise pergatory

This won't be a bad contract, for the first 3 or 4 years. It could age very poorly after that.

Considering cap has started to rise again, I find this acceptable.

Flat cap it would be a huge loss, but in 8 years this contract will be like 8% of the cap instead of 10%, and he could still be a roster player and a leader.

Winnipeg should have cut their losses and traded him. I don't think they can win a cup with this group, as much as I'd like to see them win

Parise and Suter were something like 13-year contracts, which fortunately aren’t allowed anymore, but I think what really made their situation unique was the expansion draft. Players with no-move clauses had to be protected (unless they agreed to waive the clause), which would have forced Minnesota to leave other players unprotected, and they probably would have lost somebody like Ryan Hartman instead of Carson Soucy. That plus the timing of the buyout (a week before the expansion draft) makes me wonder if Minnesota would have bought those guys out if not for the expansion draft. Suter went on to sign a contract with Dallas that actually paid him more than the remaining years of the bought-out contract would have.

This doesn't have much to do with Scheifele's contract. Just sharing my thoughts.

Young guys typically have a natural respect for older guys. This isn't an unknown phenomena. Having an older star that knows a thing or two is always going to be a good thing.
