Description

San Jose will be retaining on Burns and Karlsson for the next 2 years.

For the next 2 years, the Sharks can only retain salary on 1 other player.

Who should it be?

For the 2023-2024 season, it should be Alexander Barabanov.

For the 2024-2025 season, it should be Mikael Granlund.

Why Barabanov and Granlund?

They are the pending UFAs in those seasons that I think will yield the biggest return for the Sharks.

They also might not re-sign with the Sharks.

Unless some team comes along and blows you away with an offer for Couture or Hertl, this is the way to go.

I would go for Hoffman or Labanc this season. I actually would want to keep Barabanov, but even if we trade him, his cap hit is already so low. Hoffman/Labanc makes more sense since they have almost double the cap hit.

id lowkey argue barbs gets at least a 2nd without any retention if he keeps his current play/ uptick. we saw the price jannot got and I'd take Barabanov over Jannot

So many things are up in the air right now. I'm guessing Grier retains on Granny at the trade deadline if he can. But Granny will have to revert to his old self if this has any chance of happening.

Barabanov trade seems reasonable, but as of now Washington doesn’t have the cap space. I like this move if Oshie/Backy/Patches go down with injury before the deadline though.

I wonder if Washington would be willing to pay more if they were able to negotiate an extension for Barabanov, though I hardly think it will be a dealbreaker if they can’t.

Barbie already has a low cap hit, so I'd use retention on someone with a higher cap hit to make it low. He's already worth a 2nd, maybe even a late 1st depending on how this season goes. If retention on him is the difference between a 2nd and a 1st then yeah, i'd use it on him, but likely not the case.
