Detroit laugh and passes, Zadina is getting his contract terminated. So he's going to be a UFA come tomorrow.

Value isn’t the issue but Canucks pass imo. Makes more sense for us to keep the cap space for next offseason rather than take the extra year of Dvorak

Why not just eat the last year of Hoffman instead of paying to get rid of him? Not like Montreal needs the cap space. And yes the buyout period is over but apparently if anyone from the team went to arbitration the team gets a 2nd buyout window.

Yeah MTL won’t trade assets to get rid of Hoffman & no, no one is going to arbitration for the Habs

Habs can’t just make him sit at home and I doubt he’d be good in any locker room if he’s not playing. And the Habs don’t have the room to play him with the focus on younger players

True. I would do this same deal for Garland though.

I wouldn’t do it for Garland either. He’s a much better player than Dvorak

The Leafs are the only team that can buy Murray out in the 2nd buyout window. Habs would have to keep him.

And Hawks decline.

1. It's not like Hoffman has a history of being great in the room to begin with.
2. You don't trade 3 draft picks just to get rid of a contract that is done at the end of the season. If Hoffman becomes a problem in the room just send him home and pay him out for this year and then be rid of his contract at the end of the season.

Marginally maybe in a vacuum but when you consider Dvorak is a center he would just fit us so much better. And we'd have one yr less at 5 mil.

Not marginally better. Significantly better. Dvorak is awful defensively and is a 30-35 point guy. Garland is good defensively and a 45-55 point guy. I’d rather 3 years at 5 mil of a player who’s worth it rather than 2 years of a 4.5 mil player that’s worth half that

How do you make the determination that Garland is good defensively and Dvorak isn't?

His defensive play has dropped dramatically since going to Montreal. It started getting worse his last year in Arizona, but is now significantly worse

That card is his last yr in Arizona.

Why has it gotten so much worse? I like using these cards too but sometimes I think they can be overused. That is to say a coaching change, role change, team change can have a dramatic impact on a player.

If he's done it in the past you'd wanna know why he isn't doing it now, especially when it's not age related. Maybe you know?

To make my case even further though. One thing I noticed was Zone starts. Garland went from 70% offensive zone in his last yr in Arizona to 57% to 52% last yr. Dvorak on the other hand was at 41% last season, 44% the yr before, 47% and 62% in his last two yrs in Arizona. I don't know what goes into those defensive metrics but I'm wondering if that skews the numbers.

Ultimately though I'd look at it like this. The difference between Dvorak and our 3c be it Blueger or Aman is bigger than the difference between Garland and his replacement (Hoglander, Di Giuseppi, Podkolzen) whoever it is. We have a lot of depth on the wing and nothing down the center so even if Garland individually might be a better player than Dvorak we could still improve the team making the trade. The icing on the cake is that you get out from the 5 mil commitment a yr earlier with Dvorak as well.
