Values of prospects change since the time they're drafted. Holtz's value has since fallen off quite a bit. Bordeleau's stock has risen considerably. Bordeleau > Holtz at this stage. Same thing happened with Merkley, his value fell quite a bit (as did Kaut's, which is why the trade actually wasn't half-bad for both teams).
Rossi's a beast and don't think an A++ prospect like him belongs in this conversation.
Tbf I’m just going off of the most recent Athletic prospect rankings (February) and the NHLes (which aren’t out of date or an objective February ranking)
Those 3 were ranked
Hutson 17
Rossi 19
Holtz 22
Bordeleau was an honorable mention
NHLe model
Star%
Bordeleau 3% (120th in NHL)
Holtz 10% (46th)
Hutson 17%(28th)
NHLer%
Bordeleau 28% (143rd in the NHL)
Holtz 70% (54th)
Hutson 95% (16th)
Can’t find Rossi’s ranking, but he’s 74% Star and 87%nhler
You’re also higher on Rossi than most. I would also consider him an A+, but I don’t think NHL teams do right now. I love knowing there are still Rossi believers out there though 😂
With all that said though, I was definitely lower on Bordeleau than deserved, and I’m curious to see what the objective rankings; that aren’t just pure data, have to say about him after this year, because 22 goals for the guy is impressive. I would probably still have him as a B prospect regardless, but more of a solid B with upside than what I was thinking before as a fringe NHLer.
I wouldn’t agree he is a better prospect than Alex Holtz though, depending on what you value more maybe. The numbers speak for themselves above, but Holtz also had better AHL numbers when adjusting both for a full season. Though Bordeleau had stronger NHL numbers when adjusted for 82 games, Holtz was playing heavily sheltered minutes, when that is probably the worst way to develop him at that level.
Maybe both have top 6 upside though, so I understand valuing the center more when a team isn’t set down the middle. He’d definitely be the best center in the NJ pipeline
