The easiest and most obvious solution
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AnonymousSensFan</b></div><div>10x7 = 70million. 9x8 = 72million. So, Nylander will make less money joining another team only if he retires and the end of that 7th year, or earlier. However, if in that 8th year he signs another contract worth more than 2 million, he'll come out ahead joining another team than signing an 8 year deal with the Leafs.
This also ignores the option of signing a 7 year deal in a tax friendly state, in which case he'll easily make more $ with that contract alone than signing 8 years with leafs</div></div>
Maybe he goes to a “tax friendly state”. But one thing for sure is that he won’t get all of his money upfront in signing bonuses (which are actually taxed differently than regular salary), and he also won’t get anywhere near the same amount of endorsement opportunities. Imo, this comes down to whether or not he wants to be a Leaf, and I think it’s safe to say that he does.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Killa93</b></div><div>You a till have Muzzin on your team. All players count against the cap until the season starts. A player can only be put on LTIR till after the season starts.

If you think that the leafs are going to sign Nylander for 10 as long as he shaves off one year then you’re wrong. If they don’t sign him, he’s gone.
Starting the season with 4 rookies on your team makes you brain dead Leaf fan of the year.
People post on here for fun. Try enjoying it.</div></div>
Muzzin’s contract can be move in this instance. I’m not too informed about the nuances of the cap but last year we started with Lilly on LTIR (we would’ve been over had he not been), so I’m not sure why that can’t be applied to muzzin.
Robertson played the right side a lot on the marlies and actually showed a lot of success there.
My point about Nylander is that if he wants 10, another team can only offer him a maximum of 7 years. So, he’d ultimately make less money than if he were to take a 9x8 with us.
You’re acting like I signed Ryan Reaves. If treliving thought that we had to sign another player because “Reaves won’t play much” , then it’s a terrible signing in of itself. We don’t have the luxury of handing out more money to another player to “fill in” his spot.
And playing four rookies is something that has to be done given the nature of our cap situation. It’s impossible to find value in guys that are that cheap. And just because they’re “rookies” doesn’t mean they’re not a better option than a player that has more experience (of being a bad NHLer).

Nylander To Washington
We’re not losing Nylander unless he has a a strong desire to play elsewhere regardless of money. The extra year we can offer him, plus front-loading the contract on SBs, allows us to match any contract that he’s offered on the market, but at a lower cap hit. A deal will get done.

Enough of the egotistical Nylander
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>I just meant right now, it's Nylander is greedy, later it will be "Treliving lowballed him, fire Treliving". Treliving is definitely going to start the negotiations in the 8s (some people were saying 8M on the dot), and Nylander's cap will start at 10M, they might find a middle ground, or they might not. Treliving needs to worry about signing other players like Matthews and building a winning roster, but fans can't expect Nylander to sign a team-friendly deal just so that others can get paid more. Yeah, that could mean he no longer has a future with the Leafs but there are other teams out there that would love to have him.</div></div>
Do you think a team would give Nylander 11x7, because that’s likely what it would take to offer more money than the Leafs. And I’m not that invested in the whole “tax” thing. I’m sure there’s some real arguments there. I do know the Leafs have the luxury of front-loading contracts with big signing bonuses. That’s supposedly a significant advantage (I don’t really know why). Either way, even if Willy was offered that contract, I don’t think there’s a single competitive team in the league that would actually be able to afford that contract, and I’m still not sure why any non-competitive team would want to sign that contract.
I do agree they will meet in the middle eventually. Something in the 9-9.5 range. Everything that happens between now and then is just noise.

Trading liljegren makes the team worse now, and will hurt us even more in the future. He's ready for top-4 minutes and his next contract is going to be very affordable. I wouldn't trade him straight up for a late first. There's more effective ways of getting rid of Murray's contract and I just don't see any reason to move on from Lilly.

That trade could be for Tanev/Hanifin/Zadorov. I get Hanifin is the best, but realistically, I don't see them getting more than that if their goal is to sell him for futures.

It could be any one of Tanev/Zadorov/Hanifin. At this point, CGY would probably give up Vladar for free. They have zero need for him next year, the market for him won't be demanding at all, and 2.2 million dollars in cap space is a lot for them right now. I only added retention in this case because I think it would work if he was traded with another player going out.

Brodie can’t go, especially since we pretty much have two Morgan Rielly’s now. There’s other ways to open up cap that aren’t as detrimental to the team.

Off-season roster and final signings before season starts
I could actually see something like this, especially given the fact that Sammy could easily demand 4 + on a long-term deal (which would be awful anyways). After Vegas won the cup last year practically cycling between 4 goalies that were pretty much perceived as backups all season long and still finished as one of the best teams in the regular season, I think a lot of teams will follow suit. Maybe you get Vladar and then sign two guys who can be buried in the minors and give 10 games each in the regular season.

Higher cost to acquire, would be very difficult to extend and if we did it would probably be on a bad contract. Tanev is better defensively and just an overall better fit next to Rielly.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>See this is entirely not true. The reason Barrie didnt work here is for one our defensive depth sucked and second Babcock didnt know how to use him
Our blue line had Ceci, an injured Muzzin, and Dermott on the team. Now we got upgrades over all 3 (well maybe besides Muzzin but whateves)
If we look at Carolina they have 2 offensive Dman and they are doing just fine.
Toronto need's offense as in the playoffs defense wasnt the issue a lack of SCORING was as they scored 2 goals a game after R1 u think they going anywhere with that no
McCabe, Brodie, Giordano, and Holl can handle the defensive responsibilities while Rielly and Klingberg provide the offense
And if we get playoff Reilly in the reg season 0 issue as he was good both ends and yes this guy can put up 10 + goal seasons if healthy hes already done it twice</div></div>
Listen man, you can have whatever opinion you want and I respect that. I can’t say anything that’ll convince you this will be horrible, but don’t be surprised when it doesn’t work.

Rielly is not a 10-15 goal scorer tbh. And klingberg might be the only defencman in the league that’s worse at defence than Rielly.. having two of those kind of players on the same blue line is a recipe for disaster. We literally did it in 19-20 with Barrie. There’s no angle at which this signing isn’t a disaster. I want management to answer. There has to be a reason.
