How is Los Angeles supposed to absorb Dubois' $9 million cap hit this season when Byfield's and Durzi's combined cap hit is less than $2.6 million and we'd have to replace Durzi on the roster with another defenseman?
Assuming that the replacement defenseman was Jordan Spence, that's $2.6 million cap out and $9.8 million cap in, for a negative discrepancy of $7.2 million, thereby using up almost all of the $7.4 million in cap space we have now, which would prevent us from re-signing Gabe Vilardi, Rasmus Kupari or Tobias Bjornfot and leaving us with a roster of 12 forwards, 5 defensemen and 1 goalie before further roster/cap adjustments. And every player we sold off to create cap space, like Alex Iafallo or Viktor Arvidsson, would create another roster hole that would have to be filled with a player whose cap hit would be at least $900,000.
Dubois to Los Angeles for Arvidsson and Iafallo is the only combination that recognizes the inescapable realities of the math involved. And since that proposition makes virtually no sense for either team, I suspect that its origin is a masturbatory pundit idly creating meaningless clickbait.
