Getting a haul for Toews

Description
Need to get young players in and start building up for the next phase of their window. Toews is a loss but Byram can step in for him and it's more of a priority to keep Bo long-term than Toews. Yes, that's a big return for Toews but he's the real deal and will improve the CBJ D a LOT which is a big area of need for them. They can afford to lose the guys up front because they have a deep system. Avs now have two 1sts to help restock the depleted system.

Did you not see that he re-signs with CBJ? Pretty much any deal for pending UFA's assumes they re-sign the player coming to them.

Not sure how you think that's relevant when Columbus would be the team signing him to an extension after the trade. If you think you can sell someone on a "trust me bro, they'll re-sign so you have to pay more" good luck with that

CBJ have Werenski locked in and Mateychuk + Svozil in the pipeline, they don't need an 'too be old & expensive' Devon Toews

Oh, for the love of...teams are frequently permitted to speak with agents and players about potentially signing a new deal with the team they're being traded to. Since sign-and-trades rarely happen, that would be the situation here. It isn't at all unrealistic to think it couldn't play out that way.

Maybe they'd rather go with the "sure thing" with Toews rather than banking on kids that might make an impact somewhere down the road? I mean, the clock is ticking on Laine and Gaudreau right now so, can they afford to wait for the arrival of those players?

They were pretty high on Mateychuk, they drafted him what ? 10th OA I think

That's fine and a good thing for them but is he ready to step in and be an impact player right now? CBJ have been patient but they need to step it up after going out and landing Gaudreau and their D are not up to the task currently.

Teams are frequently permitted to speak with agents and players prior to making a trade, yes. That does not however change the FACT that they are traded as a pending UFA and then sometimes sign deals after.

There are only 2 sign-and-trades in NHL History. The first was Hossa for Heatley, where Ottawa signed Hossa to an extension and then immediately traded him to Atlanta without telling him he was being traded during the contract negotiations. The 2nd was Matthew Tkachuk to Florida last year because Florida wanted to lower Tkachuks AAV and have him signed for 8 years but Calgary was the only team in the league that could sign him to an 8 year deal.

There has never been a sign-and-trade with a pending UFA as there is zero benefit for the acquiring team to pay extra for them to be pre-signed. And since conditional re-sign picks were made illegal in the last CBA update it is impossible to market a pending UFA as anything more than a rental. So yes actually it is completely unrealistic to think it could play out that way.

This is all true. However, for the Avs to get full value for Toews in any trade scenario, he would have to agree to a new extension with the new team. So he would be given permission to negotiate with teams in advance. If he is going to be a rental anywhere, it will be with the Avs as he is far more valuable to the team as a rental than what he would bring in a trade return from a team that viewed him as a rental.

In the event that Toews wants more money or term than the Avs are willing to give him, I could see this scenario play out:

1. The two sides realize they are too far apart on $ or term to get a deal done.
2. Toews gives the Avs a list of teams that he is willing to sign a long term extension with.
3. Avs find a trade package with one or several of those teams that they would accept for Toews.
4. Toews is allowed to negotiate a new contract with that team(s).
5. If they come to an agreement, then the trade is finalized. Toews signs the extension after the start of the new league year.

It took Weegar, Huberdeau and a 1st to get Tkachuk from Calgary. Weegar was a top pair RHD who played the left side with Ekblad and was top 15 in Norris biting his last 2 years in Florida. Huberdeau was traded after a 115 point season and was 5th in Hart voting for league MVP. After those 2 pretty great players, Florida added a 1st round pick to get the RFA vs the upcoming UFAs.

Players with 1 year left on their contract when they are traded don’t command the type of value people on here expect, it would be a different story if Columbus were renting him and going for a Stanley cup, but they aren’t and Toews doesn’t make them a cup contender.

A good comparison would be the Lindholm to Boston trade that got a project player, (vaakanainen), a 1st (22nd OA), a 2nd and a cap dump (Moore). Lindholm then signed an extension with the bruins after being traded. So a Toews to Columbus trade would be something like Foudy and the LAK 1st and a 3rd in 2024, taking out the cap dump and the 2nd paying them to take the cap dump, so Columbus adds a 3rd or something.

If we're looking to restock, I'd rather drop Foudy and see if CBJ throws in another pick. He doesn't add much to the deal. Overall, though, I don't mind the general trade proposal assuming Avs are unwilling/unable to retain Toews long-term. Not sure I'd take on the mystery that is Mantha. His raw production has dropped off, but his advanced numbers are strong. Maybe COL is the type of high expectation group that gets him back to earlier form. That said, the way COL develops later round talent, dealing a 4th round is the same as dealing a 6 or 7, so it's worth trying.

I understand what you are saying from the Avs perspective but no team is going to pay more than rental value for him. He could still absolutely get a haul but not this

would you do some sort of trade involving Mantha and Toews? Our D is set for next year, but I would love Devon Toews in DC

As everyone has already said, the blockbuster Tkachuk trade last year proves players can be traded at long term value and not as rentals.

Tkachuk was not a pending UFA he was not under contract at all. Calgary was the only team that could sign him to an 8 year deal. That is not the case with Toews.

These are not remotely comparable, try again
