I certainly am as a Leaf fan. We're not in the locker room to know any of what goes on. But I do see him compete when it's playoff time, much better than what we get from Nylander.

You get a D that was tied for 10th in goals for defenseman this season(He has 2 more than Fox, 3 more than Heiskanen). One of the best hitters in the game, for $1.875M and you give up spare parts? Why wouldn't Calgary just trade him at the deadline to the highest bidder if that's all they can get right now.

That season is what is referred to as an anomaly. 14 goals is more than his last 3 (almost 4) seasons combined and he still finished with less points than last season. Thank what you want but he's not fetching top dollar.

I agree it's an anomaly, but he did that without getting any PP time, and it still increases his value.

I'm not saying he's fetching a 1st back, but the Flames aren't retaining either.

He was quite good when he had to step up playing with Weegar in a top 4 role this year. He's been a staple on PK1. He's great at using his stick in separating players from the puck at the blue-line, he has a good shot, and he's relatively fast in transition. He has flaws too, especially at defending the cycle, keeping pucks in the O-zone, defending odd man rushes, and tying up sticks at the front of the net.

And since that time he has turned into a very effective 3rd pairing defenseman who can move up to the 2nd pair when necessary - is huge, plays physical and scored 14 goals last season.

So of course we should take less than what we paid for for him originally - that is the Cap Friendly way!

Well other than the obvious that it is f'n hot garbage...

1. Zadorov is coming off back to back good years, I would even say last season was very good.
2. You have us eating salary on a solid contract.
3. The return is a borderline ECHL/AHL defenseman, a 4th and a 5th. When Zadorov probably gets a 2nd in the current marketplace, at the very least a pair of thirds and/or comparable prospects.

The goals were an anomaly, yes, but he played the same way the season before but instead of him scoring goals, he would set someone up in the slot or create a rebound goal. So the point total or offense generated was not an anomaly.

We can get a 2nd for Z without retaining

Nylander is the better player at this point but there is zero chance Willie Styles signs long term in Manitoba.
