Nylander and Lily for Weegar and Dube

Description
Leafs upgrade on D. Calgary upgrade at forward. Both teams get a young replacement players in the spots they are downgrading at. Calgary only does this if they think they can extend Nylander to a reasonable deal. If they don't think that, they probably don't pull the trigger. No extension is in place for this AGM though.

I LOVE this d corp and their 4th line. I like their goaltending. But I do think they are missing size and physicality in their top 6 and on that 3rd line. I would look at turning Jarnkrok and Robertson into bigger guys. But ultimately I would be okay starting the year with this. That 3rd line could end up being a lot of fun and producing.
Team is cap compliant with a 22 person roster.

Thoughts?

Easy no from Toronto. Weager is good but overpaid and Dube, well he’s good, but you don’t need to give up guys like Nylander to acquire a player like that.

You are trolling if you think Weegar is overpaid, come on man. 6.25M for one of the best defensive defensemen in the league, that is also good offensively?

As much as I’d like to see the Flames add Willy, I just don’t want them to move Weegar, one of the best defensive defenceman in the league and one of the lone bright spots for us in an otherwise horrible season

He struggled early in the year and came on and played much better later in the year. I would not call him one of the best DFD in the league. I have witnessed him get victimized too many times including in the playoffs with Florida last year. That said, you don’t pay a guy $6.25 to play half a good season. 6.25 million long term can buy you a lot of defenceman in the open market without giving up star players.

Weegar has had defensive failures but he is still year after year consistently one of the top defensive defensemen in the league. A few bad plays is all people ever seem to remember though and never the other 25+ great plays he makes each game

He was pretty awful in the first half of this year. I would expect a lot more for $6,250,000 per long term.

Weegar at $6.25M is overpaid imo, but Weegar @$6.25M for 8 years is toxic. No chance

What are your thoughts on the trade overall? I did make and post the Calgary perspective as well.

Right because that had nothing to do with being on a brand new team with a brand new system. Also he wasn't awful by any means, just not as good as Flames fans were expecting right away

I think Liljegren for Dube is a fairly close swap in a vacuum. I would not trade 8 years of Weegar for 1 year of Nylander. Far too often people forget the value of term on this site

Newtown is regularly out to lunch. Weegar is underpaid, if anything. Scores a quiet 30+pts a season while putting up insane defensive numbers. People don't talk about him because he doesn't make flashy end-to-end plays like Karlsson. Is his term iffy? Maybe. But the cap will continue to rise in years to come, where'll he will continue to be underpaid. Whoever trades him for Nylander should be fired into the sun immediately.

Definitely. I did state that Calgary would need to believe strongly that they could extend Nylander, otherwise they don't pull the trigger. Or the new Gm doesn't like the 8 year contract for Weegar. But fair enough!

Calgary has a lot of dman and I can see them using one to get a forward upgrade. BUT it would all depend on how their extension conversations are going with Lindholm and Hanafin. Those 2 are big ones that they need to lock up on July 1st or trade prior to that time. Backlund also falls into that category but he is a lesser priority in my mind, based on age.

Whether Calgary believes they can extend him does not change the value of the trade. You cant quantify a "trust me bro," you can quantify 8 years already signed

Hawks decline. The only reason they consider taking Murray at all is to get the Boston '23 1st in a pick swap.

I ‘ve seen him struggle plenty especially in big games. He’s not a guy I would pay $6.25 or rely on. We can disagree on this. On the flames I think he’s probably 4th best behind Anderson who’s more consistent and better offensively. Hanifin who while somewhat inconsistent like Weager handles tough matchups better, and Tanev who is very good but can’t stay healthy.

Let’s put it this way, if Weager played consistently at the top of his game I would agree with you but he isn’t consistent and sometimes fails to show up when it matters. That said he was very very good to finish the year. Perhaps the slow start was him adjusting to a new team, coach etc.

You're putting a lot of weight on his 'inconsistencies' (that for all we know, are just your opinion). If he was as inconsistent as you preach, his metrics wouldn't be as good as they were.

You're also not using context. He moved to a completely new system and had to play a season under Daryl Sutter. And STILL, ranked in the 99th percentile among other defenseman in similar roles for defensive impact. (Yes, he is one of the leagues top DFD's).

He actually played a more difficult role than each of Hanifin, Andersson and Tanev, and had a far greater defensive impact as well. To say he's "the 4th best" would be stretching the narrative beyond recognition.

Again, his term length is a question mark, but the cap will have risen much higher by the time it would become a problem. He's 29, not 34.

Are you saying he started the season well? I watched a lot of Flames games early and he seemed to be the one struggling the most back there. Overall I thought the team was good but Markstrom was really really off and as the season wore on this effected the teams play. So much pressure on Huberdeau to score and when he did, the team did, Markstrom always seemed to let in the back breaker. This pressure seemed to mount on everyone — including Sutter. I think the Flames are much better than last year and should bounce back. I would suspect Markstrom will be better — he can’t be worse — and like some of his teammates has had some consistency issues. I’d expect the Flames to be much improved this coming season even without many changes. And as mentioned, now that Weager has settled in we’ll see a full season from him.

There really aren’t a lot of Flames players that can be worse. Kadri, Huberdeau, Lindholm, Weager, Hanifin, Markstrom should all be better than they were last season. Maybe toffoli isn’t better, because he’s probably the only one that had a very good season. I’d expect Magiapane and Dube to be better as well. They also have a couple of nice rookies at F that should see more playing time.Heck even Vladar should be better if Markstrom returns to form and he doesn’t need to carry as big of a load as he did this past year.
