Karlsson an option

Description
Is karlsson a smart option? He’s about to win the Norris but is San Jose still willing to retain 3-4 million on him? Still older and injury history. At 8 million I’d take the chance, could make the leafs power play elite and seems like they need more offence from the back end.
Trade Marner for young players and the team seems a lot more balanced. Just an idea I’d like to discuss, not sure on trade value for karlsson.

Gotta admit as I got into this, wasn’t really sure how to go about using the cap space, but anyways just an idea.

No. Perron is needed. Brodie stunk in the playoffs. That's why you're trying to trade him.

Ok sure that’s fine. Was just looking somewhere to send him if they got karlsson.
They both in expiring deals, similar money, older, not like I did it for Raymond lol.

Columbus isn’t moving that much for 2 seasons of Marner, he doesn’t make them a cup contender. Also Marner isn’t resigning with Columbus once he’s a UFA. When Marner was an RFA he basically said he wanted to be a Leaf and was using the potential offersheets to get more money from the leafs.

But Perron is still useful, Brodie looked old and out of place in playoffs.

If they were to trade for a top player in the league, it’s not crazy that they have to trade 2 high end prospects and some picks. Totally cool if they wouldn’t want to do it. You can say Marner wouldn’t resign there, no one thought Johnny sign there either. And they didn’t sign him to be in a rebuilt forever. They have other great prospects and the third overall coming in so I think they are in prime position to make a splash.

I think Sharks aim for around 2.5 retention and maybe add a 3rd, but I definitely don't hate that deal tbh.

I think Leafs still come out on top of this, especially if it ended up being 3.5 mil retention. I can't imagine Liljegren, Robertson, or the late 2023 First coming anywhere near the level of talent as EK65. But definitely some solid assets coming back that fit the Sharks timeline.

Thanks for the input! Kind of where I was at with it, seems like it could be a win win because this could hurt the leafs in the long run but could be what they need over the next couple years.

The point is they're a rebuilding team that's likely to take a step forward with these young players and this sets them back in the long term, and doesn't help them in the short term. Johnson is likely a top 6 forward with potential to be as good as Marner. Jiricek is probably the best defensive prospect in the entire league right now. The 22 overall pick will also be pretty solid player in the future.

CBJ is set up perfectly to emerge as a top team in the league in the next 3-4 years and this sets them back.

Wings pass. Rather just keep Perron. Not a huge deal of a trade relative to the others here, but Detroit imo just isn't a good fit

They are still rebuilding and they just signed gaudreau to be that guy. A 5th overall and a 6th overall plus a 1st for 2 years of marner is ridiculous

Marner plays the position of least need for Columbus, who have at lest four perfectly good top-6 wingers. If they're sending out two of their top three assets (KJ and Jiricek), it will be for something they need: a center. And even if your trade was for Matthews, Columbus still declines because there's no change he'd re-sign here and then they've mortgaged their future for nothing.

PLEASE, Leafs fans, move on. Columbus is not trading for Marner.

How do so many fans from one fanbase get the exact same silly idea in their head without any kind of actual rumors floating about? You all did the same thing with your Boone proposals and now you expect Columbus to gut their team for Mitch Marner. You guys really make this site not fun.

Nah everyone getting so upset about a trade idea is what makes it not fun. I’m sure if people posted tkachuk for Huberdeau weager and a first last year everyone would lose it. We don’t really know what could happen, that’s why just making up ideas is fun. It’s fine to say nah I don’t think this makes sense for this team, totally cool, no reason to get upset.

And this silliness makes it even worse. You have pretty much every response in here telling you this is a terrible proposal and you just stick to your guns as if you know better what a team would go for than it's own fans that actually have a grasp on team needs. Take the feedback and accept that Marner to Columbus for their key young players that they're staking their future on is just not a thing that's going to happen.

My first response to the feedback said it would take top prospects for Marner but totally cool if Columbus wouldn’t want to do it? That’s what I meant by it’s just an idea man. I’d like to trade Marner for prospects mostly because I like the flexibility of the cap space, I used Columbus, not a good idea, it’s all good.

Cool the price, too. Can't thing of any teams can or willing to give two top prospects, a decent first, and an early 2nd for two years of any player, especially at 11M.

There’s very few teams in the league that even have two prospects of jiricek and KJs caliber in the first place. Which I guess is why the leafs fans keep choosing the jackets
