There are 25 captains in the NHL. Off the top of my head: Crosby, Ovechkin, McDavid, Bergeron, Landeskog, Hischier, Stamkos, Barkov, Josi, Kopitar are all easily better than Trouba.

If the Queen had balls she'd be King... Also, if he was paid $5 million a year he would only be overpaid by $2 Million per year!! But, he's not... he is paid $8 million a year, is probably the most overpaid player in the league, and is likely the worst captain in the NHL. You don't pay someone $8 Mil because he makes big open ice hits... He is awful.

Jordan Staal in Carolina belongs here too - the perfect captain for the Canes and combo with the Head Coach. This is what a captain is supposed to be - and extension of the coach.

I think he’s a good case for what can happen when a team trades for an expiring contract (either UFA or RFA) and dives head first before having the player in their locker room and system.

The added pressure of paying assets for a player can make GMs turn to jelly sometimes.

I’ll second this that Rangers fans are funny (every team is this way). I enjoy interacting with Rangers fans on here because they keep me on my toes.

Trouba is the best or the worst, Chytil is a bum and the greatest 2C, Trocheck is simultaneously a great and terrible signing. I see they have the best prospects, want all the top players without trading them. And none of you realize that you’re about to get offer sheeted on Miller if you add big and sign a big name player.

Look at his Hockey analytics card... His market value is $1.2 million. That's similar to a 7th Dman who steps in for someone when injured... Yes you guys are paying him $8 Mil per year.

Up until recently I would've put Toews up there. But, these days, he seems less interested in being "the captain" and more so in just playing the game. I'm sure the trajectory of CHI, just age in general, and everything he has been through in recent years has changed him. Regardless, I still think he is a better leader than Trouba. I can see them wanting to have a heavy hitter/gritty player like Trouba around, but trying to build a team identity around it is the wrong play for the Rangers. His cap hit doesn't really have an effect whether those things are true or not.

There was a good article in the athletic earlier this season about that phenomenon. Cautioned against massive extensions for UFA trade acquisitions the prior year I.e. huberdeau. It’s like chasing good money with bad money and being scared of losing a guy for nothing. Sometimes that’s the better option

He should be bought out. What he brings to the table doesn't contribute to winning games. He was -2 and played horrendous aside from those hits he was able to deliver because he's layed low for a while and dudes weren't mentally prepared for it. I hold my breath whenever he's on the ice because it's almost a sure thing he's going to fold, or screen the goalie until the last second where he moves out of the shooting lane and lets it sail into an open net. Dude is bad. It's cool to see hits, but until they start tallying them in place of goals, he doesn't add value.
