those two things dont relate at all. You keep the player that has steadily improved throughout the year, is a big forward that you needed, and has played some of his best hockey at center well also being affective on the right side...habs could have the 1st and 2nd overall pick...still doesnt make sense to trade dach straight up for laf.

Well it makes sense to me. Dach is a playmaker, and is best suited at C but is terrible at faceoffs. He also is not better than Suzuki and so with the habs likely taking ATLEAST 1 C from this upcoming draft, there will be no room for Dach to play up the middle of the ice... Laf is a solid scoring winger, who wld thrive on a top line with Caufield and Suzuki.

another winger who thrived on the wing with suzuki...is Dach. and with suzuki and caufield i would want a playmaking winger with them so if MTL does draft a center, which i agree is pretty much 100% certain, you keep dach at center if it makes sense for the next year or two since most likely anyone they draft outside maybe bedard isnt stepping into the 2C role year 1. but they know he can produce on the wing as well, versus taking a gamble that Laff with thrive in MTL with all the added pressure. And if they decided that moving him for Laf did make sense, i dont think they would do it as a 1 for 1.

Firstly, Dach did struggle on the dot but there's been been a noticable improvement in that department over the last few weeks since he's been moved back to C.

Secondly (and far more importantly), Dach has been on a steep upward trajectory ever since joining the Habs. He become more and more confident and dynamic every game to the point where he's been the team's best player over the last month. Lafreniere however hasn't shown much progression since his draft year and there doesn't seem to be any indication that this situation is about to change.

Lastly, even if there is no room for Dach down the middle he also happens to be the player who's been the best fit beside Suzuki and Caufield since they both joined the league. This trade would be MTL trading a better player who is showing great progression in his game, in a more premium position for a lesser player in the hope that Lafreniere might play better with Suzuki and Caufield than he has with Zib and Panarin.

That would be a terrible gamble for MTL that just doesn't have any upside.
